AT&T (NYSE:T): Up 1.80% Despite a Downgrade

AT&T (NYSE:T) rose USD 0.41 to USD 22.90 on 50.78 million shares, about 1.1 times its 3-month average of 48.319 million. The likeliest driver is a rebound after the October 9 selloff, which followed news of SpaceX acquiring wireless spectrum, though no release dated October 13 confirms it. Bernstein's downgrade to Market Perform that morning cited the satellite competitor, and the stock still closed higher in published reports. Earlier in the month the company announced a fiber joint venture with BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners and CPP Investments, and in late September a USD 3 billion fiber supply agreement with Corning. It also joined T-Mobile and Verizon in a satellite connectivity venture. The company's own filings and the October 21 release are the best places to check subscriber and fiber figures. AT&T provides wireless, fiber and business connectivity in the United States. Competition is the central risk: a satellite operator with spectrum could erode wireless pricing, and one analyst cautioned that the threat could weigh on the stock for a prolonged stretch. Trailing revenue is about USD 127 billion, up 2.6%, but net income of about USD 21.4 billion is up 69%, per published data, a rise that likely reflects a one-time item and explains why the earnings growth filter passes despite flat sales. At USD 22.90 the shares are about 22% below the 52-week high of USD 29.44 and about 15% above the low of USD 19.89, simple arithmetic on published figures. A P/E of 8.05 means about USD 8.05 is paid for each USD 1 of past-year earnings. The published consensus is Buy from 25 analysts with a target near USD 28.76, which is not our forecast.

BCE (NYSE:BCE): Up 4.27% After an Upgrade

BCE (NYSE:BCE) rose USD 0.81 to USD 19.67 on 4.129 million shares, about 1.1 times its 3-month average of 3.879 million. The most direct catalyst is the October 13, 2026 upgrade by Canaccord to Buy from Hold, with a target of CAD 32. Barclays cut its target to USD 24 from USD 25 and kept Equal Weight that day, CIBC trimmed to CAD 38 from CAD 39 around October 8, and TD Securities had raised to CAD 40 from CAD 37 in mid-September. On September 29 Bell and Cisco announced a memorandum of understanding on sovereign AI infrastructure for Canada. The second quarter report on August 6 showed adjusted EPS of CAD 0.65 against CAD 0.70 expected. BCE is Canada's largest communications company, with wireless, wireline, internet and media services. Slow revenue growth, heavy capital spending on fiber and AI data centers and competitive pressure from wireless rivals are the main risks, and the payout is a large share of cash flow. Trailing revenue is about USD 17.5 billion, up 1.6%, but trailing net income of about USD 4.4 billion is up more than 900%, per published data, a rise from a depressed prior-year base that explains why the earnings growth filter passes despite almost flat sales. The stock trades near the low of its 52-week range, which runs up to USD 26.52, simple reading of published figures, so the recent rebound is small against the decline. A P/E of 4.17 means about USD 4.17 is paid for each USD 1 of past-year earnings, but the base effect makes it a weak guide.

Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY): Down 1.65% After Trial Data

Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) fell USD 0.95 to USD 56.63 on 12.927 million shares, about 1.2 times its 3-month average of 11.217 million. The news was positive but mixed: the Phase 3 trial of admilparant in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis met its primary endpoint at the lower dose, and the company said a patient death in the study was unlikely related to the drug. RBC called the results encouraging but confounding. Published reports said the higher dose did not show the same benefit, and Contineum (NASDAQ:CTNM), which holds a program against the same target, fell sharply. Interim results for RYZ101 in neuroendocrine tumors were also positive. Bristol Myers sells cancer, blood, immune, heart and nerve medicines. Patent expirations, the dose result in the lung trial and the safety signal that the company called unlikely to be drug-related are the main risks, and several brokers cut targets this month, including Cantor Fitzgerald to USD 53 from USD 59 and BofA to USD 66 from USD 71, while Leerink downgraded to Market Perform on October 5. Trailing revenue is about USD 49.2 billion, up 3.1%, but net income of about USD 9.3 billion is up 84%, per published data, a rise from a base depressed by earlier charges, which explains why the earnings growth filter passes despite slow sales. At USD 56.63 the shares are about 17% below the 52-week high of USD 68.64 and about 33% above the low of USD 42.52, simple arithmetic on published figures. A P/E of 13.12 means about USD 13.12 is paid for each USD 1 of past-year earnings.

Where Things Stand

The answer is that all three pay published yields of 4.4% to 6.4% and each faces a specific risk. AT&T (NYSE:T) rose 1.80% despite a downgrade over satellite competition. BCE (NYSE:BCE) jumped 4.27% after a Canaccord upgrade, with a P/E distorted by a low base. Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) fell 1.65% after mixed trial data and generic risks. None of the three PEGs is usable, and dividends are set by boards, not guaranteed.
