Cerebras Systems shares rallied on Monday, Oct. 5, after OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman publicly called the AI chipmaker a close partner, putting its $10 billion compute agreement with OpenAI back in the spotlight.

Altman's Comments Lift the Stock

Cerebras Systems (NASDAQ:CBRS) climbed on the Nasdaq Composite on Monday after OpenAI's Sam Altman praised the company on social media. Altman described Cerebras as a close partner of OpenAI, comments that eased speculation about the state of the relationship between the two companies. The shares rallied through the session, though reports differed on how far, with multiple market trackers listing Cerebras among Monday's notable gainers.

The boost was welcome. Cerebras, a recent initial public offering, had been weak since disappointing Earnings in mid-August, and investors have been watching closely for signs that a key customer relationship remains on solid footing.

Why the OpenAI Deal Matters

The backdrop to Altman's comment is a large commercial agreement. In January 2026, Cerebras signed a $10 billion deal with OpenAI to provide 750 megawatts of compute capacity through 2028. For a young public company, a contract of that size is a central part of the Investment story. Cerebras builds very large AI chips and systems designed to run AI models at high speed, and OpenAI is one of the most closely watched buyers of AI computing power in the world.

Any hint of friction with such a customer can weigh on sentiment, while public praise from its chief executive can do the opposite, as Monday showed. Altman's description of Cerebras as a close partner came after a stretch of weakness in the stock. The company did not issue a separate announcement tied to the move, based on available reports.

AI Leadership Carries the Nasdaq

Cerebras rallied on a day when AI names dominated. Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) rose to a record close with a Market Value of about $5.7 trillion, and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) gained after an analyst upgrade calling it "the adult in charge" on AI security and governance. Taiwan Semiconductor's (NYSE:TSM) US shares rose after Elon Musk confirmed early talks about TSM joining his Terafab chip venture, saying "just discussions, but something may come of it." Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) slipped on the same news, as it had been Terafab's sole Manufacturing partner.

The Nasdaq Composite rose 286.45 points to a record 27,477.31, and the Nasdaq-100 closed at a record 31,076.44. The S&P 500 gained 51.23 points to 7,773.95, just shy of its record, and the Dow added 90.94 points to 51,267.90.

The rally came despite pressure from bonds. The 10-year Treasury Yield climbed to its highest level since 2002, even after a weak September jobs report showed payrolls rising by only 29,000. That soft data cut bets on an October Fed hike, but a separate survey showed prices paid at their highest since July 2022. One market strategist summed up the tension, noting that Growth Stocks were rallying on softer Fed expectations even as the Risk-Free Rate used to judge their valuations stayed exceptionally high. Breadth was narrow, with new lows on the Nasdaq outnumbering new highs by more than four to one, underlining how much the market leaned on AI leaders.

What to Watch Next

For Cerebras, investors will look to the company's next Quarterly Report for updates on how the OpenAI agreement is translating into Revenue and on any new customers. Further public comments from OpenAI about its compute partners could also move the stock.

On the broader calendar, the Fed publishes minutes of its September meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. ET, with PepsiCo (NASDAQ:PEP) and Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) kicking off a busier earnings stretch later in the week. For Cerebras, the more telling date may be whenever OpenAI next discusses its compute partners publicly.
