Vertiv Holdings (NYSE:VRT) rocketed higher on Wednesday, October 28, as investors piled into the maker of power and cooling equipment for data centers after it reported a quarter that beat expectations and raised its outlook.
The stock finished among the very best performers in the S&P 500. Reports differed slightly on the exact size of the jump, but every account described a surge that dwarfed the broader market's modest gain that day.
Orders More Than Doubled
The headline number was demand. Vertiv said organic orders more than doubled in the third quarter, a sign that the build out of data centers for artificial intelligence is still gathering pace rather than leveling off.
Net sales also surged during the quarter, according to the company's results filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on October 28. Vertiv raised its full-year sales forecast by $650 million, giving investors a fresh reason to believe the order book will turn into revenue in the months ahead.
Vertiv sells the unglamorous but essential gear that keeps servers running: power distribution systems, uninterruptible power supplies, thermal management and liquid cooling. As AI chips draw more electricity and run hotter, that equipment has become increasingly important to hyperscale operators.
The CEO's Message
Chief executive Giordano Albertazzi framed the quarter as part of a much bigger story. 'We are in the middle of the largest infrastructure build-out and it's accelerating,' he said.
That line landed on a day when the AI infrastructure trade was firing on several cylinders. Oracle (NYSE:ORCL) soared after setting a $225 billion fiscal 2030 revenue target at its investor day, and SK hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY) jumped after the South Korean memory maker posted a record quarter. Flex (NASDAQ:FLEX), Micron (NASDAQ:MU), Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK), Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX), Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) and Amphenol (NYSE:APH) all climbed as well.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose for a fourth straight session to close at 11,684.00, while Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) was a notable laggard and slipped.
A Steady Market Around It
The broader market was far calmer. The S&P 500 added 21.38 points to close at 7,743.98, its third straight gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 97.53 points to 52,475.10, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 72.04 points to 26,549.85.
The Federal Reserve left its benchmark rate range unchanged in a 10-2 vote, with Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissenting in favor of a hike. The Fed's statement said economic activity is expanding at a strong pace.
Carson Group's chief market strategist Ryan Detrick said investors are weighing the Fed's decision against a separate question of whether AI spending will keep climbing. For Vertiv shareholders, the company's order book offered a loud answer.
Breadth was narrow, though. The equal-weight version of the S&P 500 slipped slightly even as the cap-weighted index rose, and trading volume came in below its 20-day average. Long-dated Treasury yields climbed, with the 10-year pushing past a key psychological threshold, and oil settled back above $100 a barrel.
Earnings and Data Flow Set Thursday's Tone
After the bell, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) rose in extended trading on a strong cloud quarter, while Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) slid sharply after missing profit expectations and raising its capital spending plans. How investors weigh those two reports will shape the AI hardware trade on Thursday.
Thursday also brings the advance reading on third-quarter GDP and September PCE inflation data at 8:30 a.m. ET. Mastercard (NYSE:MA), Merck (NYSE:MRK) and Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) report before the open, with Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) due after the close. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Meta (NASDAQ:META) report later this week, and any comments on data center spending from those giants will be read closely by Vertiv investors.
