The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) and the National Football League (NFL) have entered into a non-binding agreement under which ESPN will acquire NFL Network and other media assets, including the RedZone Channel and NFL Fantasy, in exchange for a 10% equity stake in ESPN. The agreement marks a significant shift in sports media ownership and paves the way for ESPN to expand its digital footprint through its upcoming direct-to-consumer (DTC) platform.
As part of the arrangement, ESPN will assume ownership and operational control of the NFL Network, which includes both its linear and digital rights. The network will be fully integrated into ESPN’s DTC offering, while also remaining available through traditional pay TV distribution channels. The RedZone Channel will also fall under ESPN’s control and continue to be offered to pay TV operators.
In addition, NFL Fantasy Football will be merged with ESPN Fantasy Football, creating a single season-long fantasy platform officially tied to the NFL. The companies stated that this integration aims to meet increasing global demand while enhancing the digital experience for users.
About the company: The Walt Disney Company is a global entertainment firm with a portfolio of networks including ESPN. Through this agreement, ESPN will also license additional NFL content, including three extra games per season. ESPN will shift four of its scheduled NFL games to NFL Network, while retaining production control over all transferred games.
Despite the transfer of these assets, the NFL will continue to operate other major media properties such as NFL Films, NFL+, and digital channels like NFL.com and the NFL Podcast Network. It will also retain ownership of digital distribution rights for NFL RedZone.
The transaction is still subject to final agreements and regulatory approvals. However, both companies indicated that the collaboration is designed to expand access to NFL content and enhance the consumer experience across platforms, with ESPN leveraging its media infrastructure to deliver broader football coverage through its forthcoming streaming service.
