  • New Wuhan Innovation Center complements Shanghai R&D hub, forming dual innovation base in China.
  • Focus areas include zero-emission technologies, turbocharging, and hydrogen fuel cell solutions.
  • Marks 20 years of local innovation since establishing China presence in 2005.

Garrett Motion Inc. (NASDAQ: GTX) has officially launched its Wuhan Innovation Center, a strategic expansion of its research and development capabilities in China. Located within the company’s existing Wuhan manufacturing facility, the new center is aimed at advancing zero-emission mobility solutions and supporting automotive innovation across a range of technologies.

This latest investment reinforces Garrett’s two-decade presence in China and builds on the company’s earlier establishment of the Shanghai R&D Center in 2005. Together, the Wuhan and Shanghai centers are positioned as a dual innovation platform, addressing both domestic and global mobility challenges—especially in the context of electrification and emission reduction.

The Wuhan Innovation Center will focus on the development of technologies such as turbocharging systems for hybrid vehicles, compressors for hydrogen fuel cells, and region-specific powertrain solutions tailored to Chinese OEMs. These capabilities are expected to contribute to emissions optimization, fuel efficiency improvements, and the global competitiveness of local manufacturers.

At the inauguration event, Garrett’s CEO Olivier Rabiller emphasized China’s rapid pace of innovation and the need for close proximity to key markets. Local officials echoed the sentiment, noting the automotive sector’s strategic importance to Wuhan and the broader region’s industrial ecosystem.

Since entering China’s market, Garrett has introduced a number of localized technologies including Gasoline Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT) systems, wastegate turbochargers for plug-in hybrids and range-extended electric vehicles (PHEVs and REEVs), and hydrogen fuel cell compressors for both light and commercial vehicle platforms.

The company views the Wuhan facility as a long-term investment aimed at increasing R&D capacity, accelerating product development timelines, and supporting future growth in zero-emission mobility. Garrett’s dual R&D infrastructure in China is expected to serve both domestic demand and global customers seeking advanced powertrain solutions.
