Key Highlights

  • Shares closed down 5.83% to $5.01, trading within a session range of $4.91 to $5.09.
  • The company reported record first-half 2026 retail sales of 30,423 cars, but updated full-year Volume guidance to low-to-mid single digit growth from a higher prior target.
  • The cut is tied to a US Department of Commerce denial of authorization to sell model year 2027 vehicles under the Connected Vehicle Rule, with no appeal planned and an estimated $130 million impact.

  • The company raised $1.2 billion in Equity over 15 months and converted $640 million in Debt to equity with Volvo Cars and Geely Sweden, strengthening its capital structure.

A US regulatory ruling with no appeal planned just cost this company an estimated $130 million and forced a cut to its full-year outlook, and the stock is down sharply as a result.

Regulatory Setback Forces a Guidance Cut

The company in question is Polestar Automotive Holding UK (NASDAQ:PSNYW), a Swedish premium electric performance car Brand headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. Despite reporting record first-half 2026 retail sales of 30,423 cars, the company updated its full-year 2026 volume guidance to low-to-mid single digit growth, down from a more ambitious prior target, citing market pressure, an ongoing portfolio transition, and the US regulatory denial.

The US Department of Commerce declined to authorize sales of the company's model year 2027 vehicles under the Connected Vehicle Rule, a decision the company said carries an estimated $130 million impact with no appeal currently planned.

Second-Quarter Numbers Show the Pressure Building

Second-quarter 2026 results showed retail sales of roughly 17,300 cars, down 4% year over year, with revenue of $727 million, down 8%, and a gross Margin of negative 13%. The adjusted EBITDA loss came in at $286 million, though the net loss of $459 million represented a 55% improvement year over year, mainly due to the absence of an Impairment charge taken in the prior-year period.

Balance Sheet Moves Provide Some Offset

On a more constructive note, the company has strengthened its Capital Structure through $1.2 billion in equity raised over 15 months, a $640 million debt-to-equity conversion with Volvo Cars and Geely Sweden, and an extension of a $660 million Shareholder Loan to December 2031. Cash position stood at $888 million at the end of June 2026, down from $1,159 million at the end of 2025. The company has also opened order books for its new SUV model, with deliveries starting in the fourth quarter of 2026.
