Ford Motor shares edged lower in extended trading on Wednesday, October 28, after the automaker topped profit forecasts but missed slightly on revenue and gave a flat outlook for 2027.
Ford Motor (NYSE:F) slipped after the closing bell as investors weighed a third-quarter earnings beat against a small revenue miss and a muted view of the years ahead. The decline was modest, but it put the S&P 500 automaker on the wrong side of a mixed evening of earnings.
A Beat With Caveats
According to a closing recap, Ford's earnings per share came in ahead of estimates, while revenue fell slightly short. The company narrowed its 2026 guidance and gave a flat outlook for 2027.
Going into the report, Wall Street was looking for adjusted earnings of $0.41 a share, adjusted earnings before interest and taxes of $2.38 billion and automotive revenue of $46.2 billion. Chief Financial Officer Sherry House described the company's efforts as deliberate action to improve profitability and deliver consistent returns. The flat 2027 view may have tempered enthusiasm about the earnings beat.
Cars, Rates and Oil
Automakers face a tough mix of pressures. The Federal Reserve left its benchmark rate range unchanged on Wednesday in a 10-2 vote, and market odds of a December increase rose, according to CME FedWatch. Higher rates make auto loans more expensive for buyers.
Long-dated Treasury yields climbed, with the 10-year pushing past a key psychological threshold. Oil prices also rose, with West Texas Intermediate crude settling at $102.78 a barrel and Brent at $115.32, after Yemen's Houthis claimed a missile attack on a Saudi refinery. Elsewhere in autos, Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) rallied during the regular session after its third-quarter revenue beat and it confirmed its full-year guidance.
The Session in Brief
The S&P 500 closed at 7,743.98, up 21.38 points, for a third straight gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 97.53 points to 52,475.10, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 72.04 points to 26,549.85. Technology, led by chipmakers, and energy were the strongest sectors, while utilities, real estate and consumer staples lagged.
After the bell, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) rose on an earnings beat while Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) slid sharply after missing estimates, setting a cautious tone for overnight futures.
What to Watch
Ford's conference call will be scrutinized for detail on pricing, warranty costs, its electric-vehicle strategy and what is behind the flat 2027 outlook. Analysts' reactions, including any changes to ratings or estimates, may also shape Thursday's trading in the stock.
The macro calendar is heavy on Thursday, October 29. The advance estimate of third-quarter GDP and September PCE inflation data arrive at 8:30 a.m. ET. Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT), a bellwether for industrial demand, reports before the open with Mastercard (NYSE:MA) and Merck (NYSE:MRK). Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) reports after the close.
