Roadster Pop Fades as Analysts Question the Earnings Impact

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) closed down 2.13% at $354.72 on Oct. 16, 2026, after an early gain faded. Shares had jumped as much as 5% pre-market following the flying demonstration of the Roadster with SpaceX thrusters, but analysts called the unveiling an engineering showcase with minimal earnings impact, estimating about $0.06 per share by 2029.

Production of the Roadster is not due until 2028, and no price was announced. An AI-led selloff in technology stocks also outweighed the buzz around the event, and shares closed lower on heavy volume.

Merger Speculation and an Executive Departure Add to Caution

JPMorgan kept a Neutral rating and a $415 price target. Barclays said a Tesla-SpaceX merger could come before the Dec. 6 annual meeting, which it described as a swing factor for the stock. Speculation about a combination has weighed on sentiment as investors question how it would be structured.

The vice president of energy and charging also stepped down, adding to the cautious tone around the shares.

Valuation Remains Elevated as Competition Intensifies

The stock has a market capitalization of about $1.40 trillion, a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 149.33, a trailing ratio of 328.29 and earnings per share of $1.74. Its 52-week range is $297.38 to $498.83, leaving shares roughly 29% below the high end of that band.

Tesla remains the leading U.S. electric vehicle maker, but its share is slipping as legacy automakers and Chinese rivals compete harder. Automotive revenue makes up roughly 79% of the total.

Outlook: Oct. 21 Earnings and Merger Talk Take Center Stage

Investors now look ahead to third-quarter results on Oct. 21, with earnings per share expected to decline about 14%. The company's comments on margins, production plans for the Roadster and any update on merger discussions are likely to shape sentiment in the coming sessions.
