IonQ: Fast Growth, Large Paper Losses
IonQ (NYSE:IONQ) reported second quarter revenue of USD 80.1 million, about 20 percent above the midpoint of its guidance, and remaining performance obligations up 297 percent. The GAAP net loss attributable to the company was USD 1.868 billion, mainly because of a USD 1.65 billion non-cash loss from changes in Warrant fair value, which moves with the share price. Adjusted EBITDA was negative USD 120.3 million. Pro forma for SkyWater, cash falls to about USD 2.0 billion, and third quarter guidance was not given in the release. The company also closed the SkyWater deal on July 31, which adds a chip Manufacturing arm. Technical milestones include progress toward a 256-qubit system and planned error correction results.
SoundHound: Enterprise Voice AI
SoundHound AI (NASDAQ:SOUN) sells voice and conversational AI to automakers, restaurants and healthcare providers. Second quarter revenue of USD 61.9 million was up from USD 42.7 million, with non-GAAP gross Margin of 58.4 percent and a non-GAAP net loss of USD 9.0 million. Adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed to USD 9.6 million from USD 14.3 million. Management attributed growth to enterprise deals on its OASYS platform. The company cited a seven-figure healthcare deal, a pizza Brand live in more than 75 percent of locations and an eight-figure Latin American channel partnership. Guidance will be updated after the LivePerson deal closes, so full-year numbers may change, and cash is the key buffer.
Shared Risks and What to Watch
Both stocks are speculative. For IonQ (NYSE:IONQ), risks include integration of SkyWater, cash burn, warrant-driven GAAP swings and the long road to fault-tolerant machines. For SoundHound AI (NASDAQ:SOUN), the issue is whether growth of 45 percent can narrow losses before cash of USD 203 million is stretched, and how LivePerson changes the outlook. Traders will compare revenue to guidance, cash use, any change in full-year ranges and the expected LivePerson closing. Consensus figures for both quarters were not verified for this preview, and guidance often moves these stocks more than the quarter itself. None of these figures is a forecast, and results may differ from company outlooks.
Where Things Stand
The first company is IonQ (NYSE:IONQ). The second is SoundHound AI (NASDAQ:SOUN). The answer to the headline question is that both combine rapid growth with large losses, so the reports hinge on guidance rather than headlines. IonQ must show organic growth toward its USD 280 million to USD 290 million range and manage SkyWater, while SoundHound must show that enterprise wins turn into narrower losses. Both report after the close on November 5, and either stock can move sharply on guidance changes.
