Third Quarter Sales Dip and a Tax-Aided Profit
Fortune Brands Innovations (NYSE:FBIN) announced third quarter 2026 results on November 3, 2026. Sales were USD 1,113.7 million, down 3.1%. GAAP Operating Income fell 52.0% to USD 60.4 million, a 5.4% margin, and GAAP EPS was USD 0.42, down 28.8%, after a USD 0.47 impairment charge. EPS before charges and gains, a non-GAAP measure, was USD 1.14, up 4.6%, but it included a USD 0.28 net tax benefit and USD 0.14 of net Tariff refunds. Removing both gives USD 0.72 (simple arithmetic). CEO Jesse Singh said results matched the outlook excluding those benefits but fell short of where they need to be, and cited the company's own execution as the biggest challenge.
Portfolio Pruning and a Lower Guidance Bridge
The company agreed to sell Fiberon, is exiting commercial operations in China by the third quarter of 2027, and is rationalizing the EMEA footprint of a Water Business by the fourth quarter of 2027. It also expects an additional non-cash Fiberon impairment of roughly USD 175 million to USD 205 million. The EPS bridge shows how the midpoint moved from USD 3.37 to USD 3.25: minus USD 0.02 from businesses being optimized, minus USD 0.23 from the core business and end market, minus USD 0.22 for portfolio and alignment actions, plus USD 0.07 of tariff refunds and plus USD 0.28 of net tax benefit. Management said it is using the tax benefit to fund fourth quarter actions and remains on track for USD 70 million of annualized SG&A savings by the first quarter of 2027.
Housing Softness, Cash Flow and Fourth Quarter Risk
Fourth quarter sales are guided to USD 925 million to USD 995 million and EPS before charges and gains to USD 0.19 to USD 0.29, far below the third quarter. Causes cited are lower sales from exited businesses, softer single-family new construction and reduced channel inventory. The company expects new construction down mid to high single digits and repair and remodel down low single digits. Water Innovations Margin before charges fell 680 basis points to 17.6%, while Security reached 21.3%. Operating Cash Flow was USD 347.0 million and free cash flow USD 331.1 million, with USD 40 million of buybacks. Net Debt was USD 2.1 billion, or 2.5x EBITDA before charges and gains. Execution risk on the turnaround and recent Leadership changes is a stated risk factor.
Where Things Stand
Fortune Brands Innovations (NYSE:FBIN) is cutting its 2026 EPS midpoint because core Demand is softer, with new construction weakening and customers holding less inventory, and because the company is taking costly steps to sell or exit businesses losing money. Offsetting items, a USD 0.28 tax benefit and tariff refunds, cushioned the outlook, so Underlying Profit is weaker than the headline. The Balance Sheet and cash generation are solid, but the fourth quarter guide is low. Investors will watch the Fiberon sale, China exit, service levels and SG&A savings.
