Growth and Backlog
Shoals makes electrical balance of system equipment for solar and storage projects. Second quarter 2026 revenue was USD 163.4 million, up 47.4%, with Operating Income of USD 18.7 million, Net Income of USD 12.1 million, Earnings Per Share of USD 0.07 and adjusted EBITDA of USD 31.6 million. Record backlog and awarded orders reached USD 801.4 million. Third quarter guidance is revenue of USD 150 million to USD 170 million and adjusted EBITDA of USD 32 million to USD 37 million, and full-year guidance of USD 600 million to USD 640 million in revenue was reaffirmed. Gross margin fell to 30.3% from 37.2%, which investors watch closely. Record backlog does not equal profit, since gross margin fell to 30.3%.
Patent Win and Data Center Work
On August 26, 2026 a North Carolina jury found that Voltage and Ningbo Voltage Smart Production willfully infringed Shoals' patents, with damages above USD 96 million, and the court signaled an immediate preliminary injunction on Voltage's LYNX product. The earlier ITC determination became final. Shoals also plans to build about 360 PowerHub systems at its Tennessee Facility for a 1.1 gigawatt battery project with ON.energy at a hyperscale data center, with commissioning expected to begin in early fourth quarter. Closes rose from USD 6.82 on September 16 to USD 8.49 on October 6. The verdict follows an earlier ITC determination that became final, which supports Shoals' Patent position in imports.
Risks and What to Watch
Gross margin compression is the main concern, and the patent case may be appealed, so damages are not yet collected. A non-binding memorandum with TerraFlow Energy for multi-gigawatt storage is only an intention. Solar Demand depends on policy and interest rates. Shoals has a Market Value near USD 1.4 billion, so it is under USD 10 but not a penny cap, and the 52-week range of USD 5.43 to USD 13.18 leaves it well below its high. Watch the third quarter report, estimated for November 3, 2026, and Voltage appeal news. A non-binding MOU with TerraFlow Energy targets deployment of up to 5 GW of storage a year. Third quarter revenue guidance of USD 150 million to USD 170 million brackets the USD 163.4 million just reported.
Where Things Stand
Shoals Technologies (NASDAQ:SHLS) rose about 19% in a month on a patent win, record backlog and a Barclays target increase to USD 11. Margin compression and an appealable verdict temper the story. The stock is under USD 10 but is a USD 1.4 billion small cap. Watch the November 3 estimated report for margin recovery and backlog conversion. Margin recovery would be the best sign.
