GE Vernova (NYSE:GEV) powered higher on Thursday as investors cheered a quarter in which orders nearly doubled, the backlog hit a record and the energy-equipment maker doubled its share buyback to $20 billion.

Orders surge, buyback doubles

GE Vernova, the power-generation and electrification company spun off from General Electric, rose on October 29, according to market commentary. The gains came as the company's latest quarterly results continued to reverberate through the market, though the coverage did not make the exact timing of the report clear.

According to the same commentary, GE Vernova beat third-quarter expectations, with orders nearly doubling from a year earlier. The company's backlog climbed to a record of about $197 billion, and it raised its full-year guidance for revenue, EBITDA margin and free cash flow.

The company also doubled its share repurchase authorization to $20 billion and announced a $9 billion acquisition of Trench Group, according to the same commentary.

Riding the electrification wave

GE Vernova sells gas turbines, wind turbines and the grid equipment that moves electricity from power plants to homes and businesses. A surge in electricity demand, driven in part by the build-out of data centres, has made the company one of the most closely watched beneficiaries of the infrastructure boom.

That theme was on full display across the market on Thursday, even as mega-cap AI stocks sold off. Quanta Services (NYSE:PWR), which builds and maintains power lines and other Utility infrastructure, rallied after raising its 2026 Revenue outlook and reporting a record backlog of $63.73 billion. Vertiv (NYSE:VRT)'s chief executive, Giordano Albertazzi, said on Wednesday that the industry is "in the middle of the largest infrastructure buildout."

A paradox in the AI trade

The rally in GE Vernova contrasted sharply with the turmoil in big technology stocks. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) had its worst day since its 2004 IPO, erasing about $500 billion in Market Value as investors balked at its heavy Capital spending and negative free cash flow. One report said the results "reignited concerns over mounting AI costs."

The irony is that those same capital expenditures are a source of Demand for companies like GE Vernova, whose equipment supplies power to data centres. Investors on Thursday appeared willing to own the companies selling the picks and shovels of the AI buildout, even as they punished one of the biggest spenders.

Market and macro backdrop

The S&P 500 fell 23.59 points to 7,720.39, its first decline in four sessions, while the Nasdaq Composite slid 365.13 points to 26,184.72. Yet more than 400 S&P 500 members rose, and utilities were among the best-performing sectors, with the group climbing alongside health care, real estate and consumer staples.

Economic data showed third-quarter GDP growing faster than expected, with Business Investment especially strong, a backdrop that supports spending on power infrastructure. The 10-year Treasury Yield slipped back from its multi-decade highs, easing some of the pressure on capital-intensive industries.

The Federal Reserve held rates steady on Wednesday, though two officials dissented in favour of a hike and markets lean toward another increase in December.

What to watch

Investors will look for details on the Trench Group acquisition, including its timing and how it fits into GE Vernova's grid business. The pace of buyback execution under the newly doubled $20 billion authorization will also be watched closely.

The broader question is whether the record backlog converts into revenue and profits on schedule, given supply-chain constraints and the long lead times typical of large power projects. Any shift in data-centre spending plans by the biggest technology companies, including Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) after its results on Thursday evening, could influence sentiment toward the electrification trade.
