LPL Financial shares sank among the worst performers in the S&P 500 after the wealth-management firm's third-quarter revenue fell short of Wall Street's forecasts.
LPL Financial Holdings (NASDAQ:LPLA) sank on Wednesday, October 28, after the company's third-quarter revenue missed expectations, making it one of the steepest decliners in the S&P 500. The drop stood out on a day when the financials sector was among the eight S&P 500 groups to finish higher.
A Revenue Miss in a Crowded Field
LPL is the largest independent broker-dealer in the United States, providing technology, compliance, research and back-office support to thousands of independent financial advisers. Its revenue depends on advisory fees tied to client assets, commissions, and the interest earned on client cash balances.
That mix makes the company sensitive to market levels, client activity and the interest-rate environment. When revenue falls short of forecasts, investors often question whether one of those engines is losing momentum, particularly for a company investors had regarded as a steady grower.
Mixed Day for Financials
Elsewhere in the sector, reactions were split. Evercore (NYSE:EVR) surged after the investment bank's quarterly revenue and earnings far exceeded forecasts. Regional banks, by contrast, edged lower as long-dated Treasury yields climbed. Raymond James (NYSE:RJF), another large wealth manager, reported record fiscal-year revenue after the close and was little changed in extended trading.
The contrast suggested investors were sorting closely between winners and losers rather than buying or selling financial stocks as a group.
Fed Holds, Market Edges Higher
The broader backdrop was shaped by the Federal Reserve, which left its benchmark rate range unchanged in a 10-2 vote. Market odds of another hike in December rose after the meeting, according to CME FedWatch data.
The S&P 500 gained 21.38 points to 7,743.98. Leadership came from chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks, while breadth was narrow. The 10-year Treasury yield pushed past a key psychological threshold, posting its largest daily gain since late September.
What to Watch
Investors will look for analyst reaction to LPL's revenue shortfall and for any further detail on adviser recruiting, client asset flows and cash balances in the months ahead.
Thursday's calendar is packed. The advance estimate of third-quarter GDP and September PCE inflation arrive at 8:30 a.m. ET, data that could sway December rate-hike expectations and the outlook for rate-sensitive financial companies. Mastercard (NYSE:MA) reports before the open alongside Merck (NYSE:MRK) and Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT).
