CFM International, a joint venture between GE Aerospace (NYSE:GE) and Safran SA (EPA:SAF), has secured a significant new order from Riyadh Air, with the carrier finalizing a firm purchase of 120 LEAP-1A engines. These engines will power the 60 Airbus A321neo aircraft that Riyadh Air ordered last year, marking another milestone in the airline’s rapid growth strategy.

The agreement also includes spare engines, ensuring operational continuity as the airline prepares for fleet introduction and future expansion. As Riyadh Air positions itself as a premium full-service airline in the region, the addition of CFM’s next-generation engines underscores its commitment to efficient and advanced aircraft performance.

LEAP-1A Technology Designed for Performance and Durability

The LEAP-1A engine family is known for increased fuel efficiency and advanced materials designed to improve engine reliability and performance over time. CFM’s latest high-pressure turbine durability kit is incorporated into these engines, supporting lower maintenance needs and extended operational life.

Gaël Méheust, President and CEO of CFM International, noted that the company is pleased to support Riyadh Air’s fleet introduction. He emphasized that the partnership contributes to building one of the most fuel-efficient fleets in the region while strengthening the aerospace ecosystem within Saudi Arabia. This collaboration further aligns with the kingdom’s long-term aviation development goals, including expanding technological capabilities and workforce talent in the sector.

Strategic Importance of the CFM–Riyadh Air Partnership

CFM International combines global manufacturing expertise with decades of commercial aviation experience. As Riyadh Air continues preparing for launch operations, the partnership positions both organizations to support long-term maintenance, training, and technical services associated with the LEAP-1A engine program.

The choice of LEAP-1A engines reflects Riyadh Air’s emphasis on efficient operations and the deployment of aircraft capable of maximizing performance while managing operating costs. With the aviation market in the Middle East continuing to expand, engine reliability and lifecycle value remain key considerations for growing carriers, especially those preparing to scale international routes.

Conclusion

Riyadh Air’s decision to place a firm order for 120 LEAP-1A engines marks an important step in building a high-performance fleet ahead of its commercial launch. The partnership with CFM International highlights the airline’s focus on long-term efficiency, durability, and operational readiness. With the support of GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines through CFM’s joint venture structure, Riyadh Air is positioned to integrate modern propulsion technology into its expanding network.
