Key Highlights

  • Pinnacle Financial Partners (NYSE:PNFP) reported adjusted diluted earnings of USD 2.69 per share on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, against consensus of USD 2.62 and GAAP earnings of USD 2.40, while its margin slipped to 3.40% from 3.44%.
  • SouthState Bank (NYSE:SSB) earned USD 2.30 per share, against the consensus estimate of USD 2.40, as loan accretion income from past acquisitions fell to USD 27 million, down USD 56 million from a year earlier.
  • Old National Bancorp (NASDAQ:ONB) matched the USD 0.66 estimate flagged before results, as a record 44.9% adjusted efficiency ratio offset a margin that eased to 3.52% from 3.54% on higher deposit costs.
  • All three acquisitive regionals paid more for deposits after the Federal Reserve raised rates in September, so fees and cost control, not spread income, separated the beat, the match and the miss.

Pinnacle Financial Partners (NYSE:PNFP): fees and cost control after Synovus

Pinnacle Financial Partners (NYSE:PNFP), a commercial bank operating across the southeastern United States, reported third-quarter results on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Its merger with Synovus closed on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Adjusted diluted earnings were USD 2.69 per share, against the consensus estimate of USD 2.62, while GAAP diluted earnings were USD 2.40. Merger-related expense of USD 56 million in the quarter, and USD 382 million over nine months, explains most of that gap. Loans rose USD 1.7 billion, or 2%, from June to USD 89.8 billion, mostly in commercial and industrial lending, and deposits rose USD 2.1 billion to USD 103.0 billion.

The beat came from fees and cost control rather than spread income. The net interest margin, which measures lending income against earning assets, fell 4 basis points to 3.40% as deposit costs rose and the bank built liquidity with wholesale funding. Net interest income still rose 3% to USD 986 million because the balance sheet grew. Noninterest revenue reached USD 326 million, including USD 48 million of equity-method income from BHG, a lender in which the bank holds a stake. The adjusted efficiency ratio improved to 48.9% from 49.8%.

The provision rose about 37% to USD 86 million, lifting the allowance to 1.19% of loans, which the release ties to a more adverse economic outlook and loan growth, while net charge-offs edged up to 0.23% from 0.22%. Common equity tier 1, the core regulatory capital ratio, stood at 10.01% against 10.83% a year earlier. Investors should watch the earnings call at 8:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

SouthState Bank (NYSE:SSB): organic growth replacing fading accretion

SouthState Bank (NYSE:SSB), a regional bank based in Winter Haven, Florida, reported third-quarter results at 4:05 p.m. ET on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Diluted earnings were USD 2.30 per share, against the consensus estimate of USD 2.40 and USD 2.42 a year earlier. The release shows no non-GAAP adjustments this quarter, so reported and adjusted earnings match. Net interest income rose USD 16 million, or 3%, from the second quarter to USD 591.5 million, and the net interest margin was 3.77%. Loans grew USD 1.2 billion and deposits USD 1.3 billion, both about 9% annualised.

The gap to consensus reflects fading purchase accounting more than weaker core lending. When a bank buys another, it marks acquired loans below face value, then books the discount as income, called accretion, as those loans repay. That income fell to USD 27 million, down USD 56 million from a year earlier. Net interest income was only USD 8.2 million lower than a year ago, so organic growth replaced most of the lost accretion, on simple arithmetic from the release. Funding cost more, with the cost of deposits up 4 basis points to 1.80%.

Costs moved the wrong way: the efficiency ratio, expenses divided by revenue, rose to 51.61% from 50.00% on a tax-equivalent basis, and provisions rose to USD 20.3 million from USD 15.9 million, although net charge-offs were only 0.09% of average loans. Common equity tier 1 eased to 11.1% from 11.5% a year earlier while buybacks continued. The board still raised the quarterly dividend 10% to USD 0.66, with a record date of Friday, November 6, 2026 and payment on Friday, November 13, 2026.

Old National Bancorp (NASDAQ:ONB): record efficiency as deposits outran loans

Old National Bancorp (NASDAQ:ONB), an Indiana-based regional bank with a large Midwest footprint, reported third-quarter results at 7:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Diluted earnings were USD 0.66 per share, matching the USD 0.66 estimate flagged before results and up from USD 0.46 a year earlier. Net income applicable to common shares reached a record USD 250.0 million. Noninterest income fell to USD 128.4 million from USD 153.6 million, because the second quarter held a pension gain and about USD 10 million of elevated other income.

Expenses did the work that revenue could not. Adjusted noninterest expense fell to USD 354.7 million from USD 360.1 million, taking the adjusted efficiency ratio to a record 44.9% from 45.2%; a lower ratio means less cost per dollar of revenue. The margin slipped 2 basis points to 3.52% as the total cost of deposits rose 8 basis points to 1.79%. Deposits rose about USD 1.5 billion, or 10.6% annualised, to USD 57.6 billion, more than three times as fast as loans by simple arithmetic, which supports liquidity but adds interest expense before lending absorbs the money.

The commercial pipeline, potential loans still in negotiation, fell 20% from the second-quarter record to USD 4.4 billion. Net charge-offs rose to 27 basis points from 26, and nonaccrual loans edged up to 0.92% of loans. Tangible book value per share fell to USD 13.77 from USD 14.32 in June as the bank repurchased USD 100 million of stock. The release gives no forward guidance, so the fourth quarter is the next test of the margin and the pipeline.

Where Things Stand

The answer is that all three consolidators are absorbing higher deposit costs, and each is replacing the lost spread from a different place. Pinnacle Financial Partners (NYSE:PNFP) beat at USD 2.69 on an adjusted basis because fees and a 48.9% adjusted efficiency ratio outweighed a margin down to 3.40%, while Old National Bancorp (NASDAQ:ONB) met the USD 0.66 bar through a record 44.9% efficiency ratio. SouthState Bank (NYSE:SSB) shows the limit of acquired income: accretion fell USD 56 million from a year earlier, costs rose and USD 2.30 missed the USD 2.40 consensus. The next catalysts are the Pinnacle call on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the SouthState dividend dates of Friday, November 6 and Friday, November 13, 2026, then fourth-quarter results. Adjusted figures and dividends are not guarantees, and this is not investment advice.
