FLYD Jump: Why Did an Inverse Travel Note Gain 7.05% on October 23?
MicroSectors Travel -3x Inverse ETN (NYSEARCA:FLYD) rose 7.05% to $54.01 as screened on Friday, October 23. Because it targets three times the opposite of its index's daily move, the screen implies the MerQube MicroSectors U.S. Travel Index fell about 2.35%, a calculated figure that ignores fees and intraday path.
The note, sponsored by MicroSectors and issued by Bank of Montreal, started in 2022, charges 0.95% a year and held about $5.29 million in assets. It tracks 34 US-listed travel companies, and its top 10 holdings account for 65.37% of the index.
What Is Inside the Index: Do Airlines, Cruise Lines and Platforms Move Together?
Uber (NYSE:UBER) leads at 11.04%, followed by Booking Holdings (NASDAQ:BKNG) at 9.70%, Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) at 8.22% and American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL) at 7.42%. Royal Caribbean (NYSE:RCL) holds 5.74%, Carnival (NYSE:CCL) 5.66%, Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) 4.44%, United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) 4.41%, Hilton Worldwide (NYSE:HLT) 4.36% and Airbnb (NASDAQ:ABNB) 4.36%.
Airlines and cruise operators together carry roughly a quarter of the index by these top weights (calculated at 27.67%). That makes oil a common driver, even though the platforms and hotel names depend more on booking volumes than fuel.
Fuel and Fares: How Hard Are Airline Costs Hitting Earnings?
Delta, in its October 9 report, earned adjusted $1.72 a share, below its own $2.00 to $2.50 guide, on record revenue of $17.6 billion and a 62% jump in fuel expense to $4.1 billion. It cut full-year earnings guidance to $5.10 to $5.60 from $6.50 to $7.50. United guided fourth-quarter adjusted earnings to $0.50 to $1.50 on October 20, with fuel near $4.80 a gallon.
American reported on October 22 an adjusted loss of $0.28 on revenue of $16.3 billion, up 19.3%, and guided to a fourth-quarter loss of $0.50 to $1.10 with fuel near $4.70. Gulf Coast jet fuel stood at $4.632 a gallon on October 20, and September CPI showed airline fares up 22.4% from a year earlier.
Dec Brent stood near $111.70 on October 22, up 2.65%, after attacks on Gulf shipping. Carnival had already cut its 2026 earnings outlook to about $2.21 from $2.48 in March, citing a $500 million fuel hit, and it generally does not hedge fuel.
Leverage Mechanics: Why Can a -3x Note Lose Ground Even When Travel Stocks Fall?
The note rebalances daily, so a calculated sequence of a 2.35% index fall followed by a 2.35% rise leaves the index about 0.05% lower but the note about 0.5% lower after the reset. Volatile travel names, which swing on headlines about fuel and geopolitics, make this drag larger.
The structure also carries issuer credit risk and is informational only here, not a recommendation.
Next Catalysts: Which Dates Could Move Travel Stocks?
The Federal Open Market Committee meets on October 27 and 28, and the October jobs report arrives on November 6. Further oil moves and airline guidance updates remain the dominant swing factors for the index.
