National Presto Industries Earnings: What Is Expected for the Third Quarter?
National Presto Industries (NYSE:NPK) had not issued third-quarter results as of Wednesday, October 28, and the company's filings show only the second-quarter report from July 31. The next report is expected on Tuesday, November 10, after the close, based on estimates; last year the third-quarter release came on October 24.
The estimate is earnings of $1.97 per share on revenue of about $105.0 million, which would be roughly 9% lower revenue than the $115.5 million of a year earlier. Against third-quarter 2025 EPS of $0.74, that estimate is about 166% higher (calculated), and the shares carry a market value of about $1.07 billion as screened.
National Presto Industries Second Quarter: Why Did Earnings Triple?
National Presto Industries makes defense ordnance and fuzes, housewares and small appliances, and safety products. Second-quarter net sales were $146.6 million versus $120.4 million, and net earnings were $15.9 million versus $5.2 million, or $2.21 per share versus $0.72.
For six months, net sales were $265.2 million versus $224.1 million, and net earnings were $22.5 million, or $3.14 per share, versus $12.8 million, or $1.79.
Defense sales rose $27.1 million, or 27.2%, on increased shipments from backlog, and defense operating earnings rose $4.9 million, or 33.5%, mainly on volume. Housewares and small appliance sales fell $1.2 million, or 6.2%, and safety sales rose $226,000, or 91.7%, from a nominal base, with a loss anticipated by management.
National Presto Industries Tariffs: How Much Did a Refund Matter to Housewares?
Housewares and small appliances posted operating earnings of $2.2 million, compared with a loss a year earlier, and most of that came from a refund of part of the tariffs the segment had paid. The release said the Supreme Court declared those tariffs unauthorized in its February decision.
Management attributed the sales decline to tariffs affecting retail order timing, since retailers accelerated 2025 orders ahead of price increases, and said higher tariff-driven retail prices have weighed on consumer demand.
A year earlier, the third quarter showed the opposite pattern. Defense sales rose $25.8 million, or 38.6%, with operating earnings up $1.7 million, while housewares sales fell $2.3 million, or 9.2%, and the segment posted a sizable operating loss attributed largely to tariffs. Net earnings for the quarter were $5.3 million, down from $8.1 million, even as sales rose 25.7%.
National Presto Industries Results Ahead: Will Defense Backlog Shipments Keep Carrying the Quarter?
Defense shipments from backlog drove both the second quarter of 2026 and the third quarter of 2025, so timing is the main variable. The comparison base for the third quarter is $115.5 million of sales and $0.74 per share. Watch for the release date, the defense versus housewares split, any further tariff refunds and the safety segment's losses.
