- Visa (NYSE:V) rose 9.56% to USD 401.75 into earnings, then slipped about 2% after hours on October 27, 2026 even though EPS of USD 3.48 and revenue of USD 12.14 billion slightly beat estimates.
- Consumer prices rose 3.7% through September and the University of Michigan's preliminary October sentiment index fell to 46.3, which favors value retailers and staples over discretionary spending and keeps the consumer outlook mixed.
Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT): Upgrade and Value Rotation
The first driver was analyst action. Deutsche Bank upgraded Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT) to Buy on October 15, 2026 with a USD 136 target, and Evercore ISI raised its target to USD 130 on October 20. BofA analyst Christopher Nardone highlighted the advertising business and called the company an agentic winner in AI-driven commerce. The setup was favorable: at least seven firms had cut targets on August 21, and the shares were up only 6.2% year to date at that time, so expectations were low. Published data put the gain at 13.9% through October 22, the best month since November 2014, when it rose 14.8%. Investors often read such a recovery as a reset of expectations. Consumer prices rose 3.7% through September from 3.4% in August, and the University of Michigan's preliminary October sentiment reading fell to 46.3. When households feel pressure they tend to cut discretionary purchases and shift spending toward necessities and cheaper stores, which is the logic investors cite for owning a low-price grocer and general merchandiser.
Home Depot (NYSE:HD): Rebound From a Low Base
Home Depot (NYSE:HD) traded near USD 295.64 when Melius Research initiated coverage on October 6, 2026, below its 50-day average of USD 318.34 and 200-day average of USD 325.42, with a 12-month range of USD 277.15 to USD 397.63. At USD 319.34 on October 28, the shares are about 8% above that level, simple arithmetic on two published prices. Other analysts were already positive: Jefferies reiterated Buy with a USD 398 target and Wells Fargo raised its target to USD 400 with an Overweight rating, in August. Wolfe Research had downgraded the stock to Peer Perform in June. No single company event explains October. The averages show the shares had been trading under their trend lines. On August 18, 2026 the company reported second-quarter sales of USD 47.9 billion, up 5.7%, with comparable sales up 1.7% and US comparable sales up 1.3%. Adjusted EPS was USD 4.92 against USD 4.68, and GAAP EPS was USD 4.79.
Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG): Defensive Results
Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Net sales were USD 23.3 billion, up 4%, with organic sales up 4%, driven by 2% volume growth and 1% favorable mix. Diluted EPS was USD 1.97, up 1%, and core EPS was USD 2.00, also up 1%, while currency-neutral core EPS was flat. Operating cash flow was USD 5.8 billion, with free cash flow productivity of 93%. The company returned USD 3.9 billion, including USD 2.6 billion of dividends and USD 1.3 billion of share repurchases. Chief Executive Shailesh Jejurikar said the results reflected sharpened execution of the integrated strategy. Fiscal 2027 guidance raised all-in net sales growth to 2% to 4%, reflecting the Thorne acquisition, while organic sales growth stayed at 1% to 3%. Core EPS growth was kept at in-line to 3% from USD 6.89, or USD 6.89 to USD 7.11 per share.
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA): Barclays Upgrade and Robotaxi
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) jumped about 5.2% on October 26, 2026, its best day since early July, after Barclays upgraded it to Overweight with a USD 450 target, up from USD 370, which is about 21.6% higher (simple arithmetic). The note cited a possible combination with SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX), an idea raised by the analyst that neither company has confirmed. On October 27 the stock rose 4.04% to USD 407.46, its highest close in more than three months. Together the two sessions lifted the shares about 9.4% on a compounded basis, simple arithmetic, and on October 28 the quote was USD 400.19. The upgrade was a view and not an event, since Tesla had already reported third-quarter results days earlier. Third-quarter results released earlier in October showed profit down 43%, so the rally is a bet on growth themes and not on current earnings. Investors cite a robotaxi fleet above 1,000 vehicles in Texas, a company-reported figure whose revenue was not retrieved.
Visa (NYSE:V): Run Into Earnings
Visa (NYSE:V) gained 9.56% over the month to October 28, 2026, and 10.07% over three months, as investors positioned ahead of its fiscal fourth-quarter report. No separate corporate announcement in October was found, so the move is best read as a rally in payments stocks into earnings. Mastercard (NYSE:MA) rose 11.54% over its own past month by October 25 in published market data, which points to a sector effect. Visa reported after the close on October 27, 2026, with consensus near USD 3.50 EPS on USD 12.3 billion of revenue from one earnings calendar, and options implied a move of about 3.6%. Visa has also gained steadily over six months, which meant expectations were already high. The company reported EPS of USD 3.48 and revenue of USD 12.14 billion, both slightly ahead of estimates, although published estimates differ by provider, so the size of the beat is small. The shares slipped about 1.96% to 2% after hours, which suggests profit-taking after the run-up.
Where Things Stand
The answer is that the five gained on a mix of upgrades, results and rebounds, all against inflation of 3.7%. Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT) gained on an upgrade and a shift to value. Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) gained on steady results. Visa (NYSE:V) ran into earnings. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) gained on a Barclays upgrade and speculation, and is still down 12.58% this year. Home Depot (NYSE:HD) rebounded from a low base and is down 7.01% this year. The next tests are the Federal Reserve decision on October 28, 2026 and November reports.
