Preclinical Data Lift a Low-Priced Biotech
Cellectis (NASDAQ:CLLS) shares are indicated up 5.71% at $1.11 in premarket after the company presented expanded preclinical data for .HEAL-101, its in vivo base editing candidate targeting APOC3 for severe hypertriglyceridemia, at the European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy congress. The stock closed Tuesday at $1.05, up 8.64%.
Cellectis, a Paris-based genome engineering company founded in 1999 and listed on Nasdaq and Euronext Growth, develops genetic medicines for diseases that demand a lifetime of treatment. It uses its TALEN platform to develop allogeneic CAR T-cell therapies for oncology, including lasme-cel (UCART22) and eti-cel (UCART20x22), and collaborates with partners such as Allogene Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ALLO). CEO Andre Choulika leads the company.
.HEAL-101 Shows Efficient and Specific Editing
.HEAL-101 is an APOC3-specific TALE base editor delivered as mRNA in liver-directed lipid nanoparticles, designed to permanently inactivate APOC3 after a single intravenous administration. In a human hepatic cell line, it achieved a mean editing rate of about 90% without producing DNA double-strand breaks at the target site.
In a humanized liver mouse model, a single injection edited human APOC3 at a mean rate of about 65%, reaching up to 70%.
Disease Model Shows a 75% Triglyceride Reduction
In a hypertriglyceridemic human APOC3 transgenic mouse model, .HEAL-101 reduced APOC3 by 67% and triglycerides by 75%. Editing was detected in the liver, with no significant activity in other tissues analyzed.
Cellectis plans to start a Phase 1 investigator-initiated trial in China, with preliminary clinical data expected in the second half of 2027. The poster is presented Thursday at the congress, which runs through October 30 in Hamburg.
Small Valuation Leaves the Stock Sensitive to Data
Cellectis has a market cap of $105.77 million and a loss of $0.67 per share, and the 52-week range runs from $0.88 to $5.45. Preclinical animal data may not translate to the clinic, so the planned China trial will be the first real test.
