Margin Gains Arrive Alongside a Respironics Charge
Philips (NYSE:PHG) presented third quarter 2026 results on November 3, 2026. The adjusted EBITA margin of 13% was driven by higher sales, better gross margin from newer products, productivity savings and a modest Tariff benefit. Adjusted EPS rose more than 10% to 0.40 euros. The 288 million euro provision relates to the agreement in principle with the U.S. Department of Justice on the Sleep and Respiratory Care recall. It sits in adjusting items, which are excluded from adjusted EBITA, so the 13% margin does not include the charge. Excluding the provision, adjusting items were 65 million euros, against 122 million euros a year earlier. The outlook assumes the settlement is paid in the first quarter of 2027, subject to finalizing documents.
Orders, Segments and Productivity Savings
Philips sells medical technology and personal health products. Comparable sales growth of about 3% reflected Personal Health up 8% and Connected Care up 5%, while Diagnosis and Treatment was broadly flat because of delayed ultrasound shipments and lower China sales. Diagnosis and Treatment orders grew close to 20%, which management said builds an order book supporting a fourth quarter sales pickup. Segment adjusted EBITA margins were 12.3% in Diagnosis and Treatment, 13.3% in Connected Care and 17.7% in Personal Health. Productivity measures delivered 170 million euros of savings in the quarter and 427 million euros year to date, toward a 1.5 billion euro target by the end of 2028. Management said cost Inflation remains a headwind in the high double-digit millions of euros for the year.
Balance Sheet, Tariff Refund and Risks Still Open
Cash was 2.8 billion euros and net Debt 5.4 billion euros, with net debt to adjusted EBITA at 1.7 times against 2.2 times a year earlier. A 650 million euro Green Bond was issued in August 2026 and was 2.7 times oversubscribed. The full-year margin outlook includes a roughly 1% benefit from a U.S. tariff refund, and free cash flow includes about 200 million euros of it, so underlying margin is lower. Year-to-date underlying adjusted EBITA margin excluding the refund was 11.5%. Risks include the outlook excluding other Respironics proceedings, notably the investigation by U.S. State Attorneys General, a cautious view of China as centralized procurement expands, and the timing of ultrasound sales. Connected Care orders fell mid-single digits against a very high prior-year comparison.
Where Things Stand
The margin rose because operations improved, not because the provision was ignored: the charge is excluded from adjusted EBITA, and the 13% reflects sales growth, mix and 170 million euros of quarterly productivity savings. Philips (NYSE:PHG) still faces the cash cost of the settlement, expected in the first quarter of 2027, and other legal proceedings sit outside guidance. The full-year margin range of 13.5% to 14% includes the roughly 1% tariff refund benefit. The next checkpoints are whether delayed ultrasound sales arrive in the fourth quarter and early 2027, and how the settlement documents are finalized.
