Shares of Lucid Diagnostics (NASDAQ:LUCD) rocketed in after-hours trading on Thursday, October 22, 2026, after the company said Medicare has begun paying for its EsoGuard test. The move came after the regular session had closed, making Lucid one of the biggest after-hours gainers on the Nasdaq Composite.
The stock traded around $0.46 after the bell, a sharp jump for the micro-cap company, which has a market value of roughly $67 million. After-hours prices can be volatile and are not closing prices; Friday's regular session will show whether the gain holds.
Medicare starts paying
Lucid said it has begun receiving Medicare payments for EsoGuard at a rate of $1,938.01 per test, according to a company release on October 22. The rate is set under Medicare's Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule, using the test's dedicated billing code, PLA 0114U.
"Medicare is now paying for EsoGuard," Chairman and Chief Executive Lishan Aklog, M.D., said.
EsoGuard is a DNA test designed to detect precancerous changes in the esophagus, the tube that carries food to the stomach. Reimbursement is often the critical hurdle for diagnostic companies: a test can win clinical acceptance, but without steady payments from insurers, and especially from Medicare, it is difficult to build a sustainable business. The per-test rate now gives investors a concrete figure to set against Lucid's testing volumes as the company reports them in future quarters.
A financing and a default provision addressed
Lucid also announced that it had closed a $15.0 million private placement of Series C convertible preferred stock, priced at $1,000 per share. The preferred shares are convertible into common stock at $0.3519 a share. They were bought by existing holders, including a majority of the holders of Lucid's senior secured convertible notes, according to the release.
Those noteholders also agreed that the start of Medicare payments addresses a Medicare-related default provision in the notes, the company said. Default provisions in debt agreements can give lenders rights against a borrower, so having one addressed is a meaningful step for a company of Lucid's size.
Investors will weigh the financing alongside the reimbursement news. Convertible preferred stock can add to the share count when converted, and the conversion price sits below where the stock traded after hours.
The regular session backdrop
The announcement landed after a split session. Technology stocks were hammered after Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) reported heavy AI spending and negative free cash flow, and Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) warned of supply constraints. The Nasdaq Composite fell 694.00 points to 26,008.86, its steepest drop since June 5, and it lost about $1 trillion in market value.
Health care, by contrast, was in demand. The S&P 500 health care sector hit a record high, even as Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) slid after late-stage melanoma vaccine data appeared before its scheduled presentation. About two of every three S&P 500 stocks rose, according to market reports, and the Russell 2000 edged up 3.01 points to 2,784.03.
Lucid Faces Friday's First Regular Session
Friday's regular session will be the first full test of the after-hours rally. Investors will look for detail on how quickly Medicare payments arrive, how many tests are billed and whether commercial insurers follow. The terms of the Series C preferred, including its conversion price, will also be watched as a factor in the share count. Like many micro-cap stocks, Lucid's shares may remain volatile in the days ahead.
