Seating and E-Systems

Seating produced sales of $4,624.1 million and an adjusted margin of 6.7 per cent, which the company described as flat year on year. E-Systems recorded sales of $1,585.3 million and an adjusted margin of 5.8 per cent, up from 4.9 per cent. Adjusted segment earnings were $311.5 million in Seating and $91.3 million in E-Systems. On an unadjusted basis the Seating margin was 6.2 per cent and the E-Systems margin 5.4 per cent, compared with 3.5 per cent for E-Systems a year earlier. Editorial interpretation: the E-Systems improvement appears to explain much of the group's gain in core operating margin, although a single quarter is a narrow basis for judging durability.

Cash generation and capital returns

Operating cash flow was $460.5 million, compared with $296.2 million a year earlier, and free cash flow was $287.8 million against $170.8 million. In the quarter Lear repurchased $100 million of stock, equal to 735,873 shares, and paid $39 million in dividends. About $600 million of repurchase authorisation remained. Cash was $1,000.6 million at quarter-end, with total liquidity of $3.0 billion. Management said strong cash generation allowed faster repurchases while sustaining the dividend.

Tariffs and Production Volumes Remain Unhedged in the Outlook

Lear's E-Systems margin improvement explains much of the quarter's gain in core operating margin, even as Seating stayed flat, and the company landed new seating and wiring awards from Leapmotor, Audi, Renault and Stellantis among others. Management's narrowed 2026 guidance explicitly excludes any future tariff changes or production disruptions, and with global industry production assumed to fall about 2 per cent from 2025, the outlook's resilience depends on E-Systems sustaining its margin gain rather than a broader volume recovery.
