Sensata Technologies (NYSE:ST), the sensing and electrical protection group, reported second-quarter 2026 results on 29 July 2026. Revenue was $990.6 million, up 5.0% from $943.4 million, with organic growth of 4.4%. Operating income under US GAAP rose 19.8% to $165.4 million, a 16.7% margin, while adjusted operating income was $193.3 million, a 19.5% margin, up 8.0%. Diluted GAAP earnings per share were $0.70 against $0.41 a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share were $0.98, up 12.6% from $0.87. For the first six months, revenue was $1,925.4 million, up 3.8%, with organic growth of 4.3%. Operating income under US GAAP was $307.0 million, adjusted operating income was $367.4 million, and diluted GAAP earnings per share were $1.29 compared with adjusted earnings per share of $1.84. The gap between GAAP and adjusted measures is also worth noting when comparing it with peers.

Three segments, three different margins

Automotive revenue was $544.8 million with operating income of $131.7 million, a 24.2% margin. Industrials revenue was $212.1 million with operating income of $57.5 million, or 27.1%. Aerospace, Defense and Commercial Equipment revenue was $233.7 million with operating income of $65.1 million, or 27.8%. Automotive therefore generates over half of sales but earns the lowest segment margin. That is a reminder that the group's profitability depends heavily on vehicle production volumes and customer pricing, an editorial observation rather than a company statement.

Cash generation and deleveraging

Second-quarter operating cash flow was $210.0 million and free cash flow was $186.4 million, a 130% conversion rate. For six months, free cash flow was $291.0 million. Cash stood at $403.3 million on 30 June 2026. A $400 million cash tender offer completed in the quarter retired about $406 million of long-term debt. Net long-term debt was $2,424.8 million, down from $2,828.6 million at the end of 2025. Gross leverage was 2.9 times and net leverage 2.4 times, compared with 3.4 and 2.7 at year end. Net leverage fell below the company's 2.5 times target two quarters early, according to market data. In the first half, the company paid $34.9 million in dividends and repurchased $25.1 million of shares.

Automotive Still Carries the Lowest Margin

Sensata Technologies hit its 2.5-times net leverage target two quarters ahead of schedule after a debt tender offer, with strong cash conversion the standout feature of a quarter more notable for balance sheet repair than rapid sales growth. Automotive remains the largest segment by revenue but the lowest-margin of the company's three businesses, so with third-quarter guidance pointing to seasonally lower revenue from European plant shutdowns, the margin mix across Automotive, Industrials and Aerospace will matter more than the top line for sustaining the deleveraging trend.
