Key Highlights
- Lula secured 51.78% in Brazil’s October 25, 2026 runoff despite a poll average that placed Flavio Bolsonaro ahead at 51.0%, forcing a repricing when local markets reopened.
- Petrobras preferred shares entered the result with a 35.19% 12-month gain, while press accounts said Bolsonaro had not conceded and no economic team had been announced.
- Goldman Sachs reduced its Kospi objective by 25% from 12,000 to 9,000; the index then lost 1.6% on October 26 but the target still implied more than 60% upside.
- A roughly 9% fall in November real futures and a Korean index more than 35% below June show how local shocks can be compounded for dollar-based fund holders.
How Does Lula’s Poll Upset Reach EWZ Through Both Shares and Currency?
EWZ (NYSEARCA:EWZ) owns major Brazilian companies and began October 26, 2026 after a surprise election result. Lula won the October 25 runoff with 51.78%, a margin near 4.4 million votes on 80.8% turnout, securing a fourth nonconsecutive term. Real-dollar futures rose approximately 10% Sunday evening, while the November real contract fell around 9%. In Japan, a Tokyo-listed Ibovespa fund lost more than 11% at the open and nearly 15% later.
Those overseas indicators contrasted with stale Friday closes. The Ibovespa had ended October 23 near 205,000, and the dollar around BRL 4.98. Positioning intensified the reaction. The same Tokyo vehicle gained roughly 8% following the October 4 first round because investors had anticipated a more market-friendly final outcome.
Fiscal uncertainty replaced that expectation. Public debt is approximately 93% of GDP, and the Selic rate is 14.00%. Lula had not announced a budget strategy or economic team. Goldman Sachs described an extreme scenario in which the dollar rises 10% against the real, long-term yields climb roughly 200 basis points and equities lose about 15%. A dollar-priced fund is hit both when local shares decline and when the real weakens, although the 11% to 15% Tokyo move may already incorporate much of that stress case.
Why Does State Control Add a Policy Layer to Petrobras?
Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) is controlled by the Brazilian government and opened in the United States after an unsettled election night. Press accounts identified right-wing senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who had led the final polling average, refused to concede or recognize Lula’s 51.78% result. Turnout was 80.8%.
The company’s preferred shares ended October 23 at BRL 41.64, down 0.05% that day but up 35.19% over 12 months. Part of the gain had reflected expectations of a different election result. Lower US openings were expected for Itau, Nubank, Petrobras and Vale (NYSE:VALE), although the scale could not be known before trading.
Government ownership connects the equity directly to public policy. A new term can reshape the board, capital investment and the division of cash between dividends and projects. Domestic fuel prices are politically sensitive; when Brazilian prices differ from international levels, company margins absorb part of the gap. That issue becomes more important while Brent stood at USD 116.72. Failure to concede introduces an additional political-risk premium until the transfer becomes clearer. A weaker real lowers the dollar value of domestic earnings, while elevated oil provides a partial offset.
Why Did a Lower Kospi Target Still Leave More Than 60% Upside for EWY?
EWY (NYSEARCA:EWY) follows large South Korean businesses in a market heavily influenced by memory-chip producers serving AI systems. Over October 24 and 25, Goldman Sachs reduced the 12-month Kospi objective by one quarter, from 12,000 to 9,000, after AI-equity weakness and concern about the way investment is financed. The bank retained its view that Korean shares were undervalued and still calculated upside above 60%.
On October 26, the Kospi lost 1.6% and the smaller-company Kosdaq fell 2.8%. The main index stood over 35% beneath the peak reached in June. Standard Chartered expects debt-financed AI investment to increase from 25% to 40%. During 2027 the greater dependence on borrowing would make orders more sensitive to financing conditions.
A 9,000 target with more than 60% upside implies a current index below approximately 5,625 by simple arithmetic. Prices had therefore fallen more rapidly than the assumptions underlying the revised goal. Concentration remains a risk because a few memory-chip companies dominate index weight. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) release results October 28, followed by Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) on October 29. Their spending guidance directly affects high-bandwidth-memory demand, while December Fed tightening expectations support the dollar.
What to Watch Next: How Does the US Backdrop Amplify Both Shocks?
The domestic triggers differ. Brazil faces political and fiscal repricing after a 51.78% result contradicted polling, exposing EWZ to simultaneous equity and currency declines. Petrobras adds governance, dividend and fuel-policy questions to a 35.19% prior gain. Korea’s challenge is the financing of AI demand, and a target reset to 9,000 follows an index decline exceeding 35%.
Dollar strength can intensify both outcomes for American fund holders. On October 23, the closing references preceded the B3 reopening on October 26, which provides the first full local response. During 2027 the debt-funded share of AI investment is projected to reach 40%. Appointments to Lula’s economic team may reduce or increase fiscal uncertainty. The Fed, Microsoft and Alphabet arrive October 28. Brazil’s employment report and Amazon follow October 29. Overnight vehicles and futures are brief snapshots, and index objectives are estimates rather than guaranteed outcomes. The two countries also differ in how the shock is transmitted. Brazil begins with a political surprise, then moves through fiscal expectations, the real and state influence over a large oil producer. Korea begins with credit-funded AI investment, then reaches memory demand and a concentrated equity index. For US holders, both pathways end in dollar translation. That makes the Federal Reserve relevant even though neither initial event occurred in the United States. Local appointments, earnings guidance and currency movement will determine whether the early proxies were too severe or not severe enough. This discussion is informational and does not provide investment advice. Starting from 12,000, Goldman lowered its objective to 9,000. Friday’s Ibovespa reference was near 205,000 while an upside estimate above 60% implied a current Kospi under roughly 5,625. In 2026, both currency translation and local prices remain part of the comparison. Those comparisons frame the next sessions. Overseas proxies may diverge from local trading.
