Downgrade and Steep Target Cut Pressure Shares

Knife River (NYSE:KNF) shares fell in intraday trading after a research firm downgraded the stock to Sector Perform from Outperform and slashed its price target to $58 from $103. The firm cited diesel and input cost inflation, project delays, and a second-half contracting margin outlook of 9% to 10% as key concerns, while also noting that activist investor Starboard's involvement may weigh on shares, even as it said it disagrees that management is failing investors.

Knife River is a vertically integrated construction materials and contracting services provider headquartered in Bismarck, North Dakota, that was spun off from MDU Resources (NYSE:MDU) in 2023. The company mines and processes more than 1.3 billion tons of aggregate reserves, producing crushed stone, sand, gravel, asphalt, and ready-mix concrete, and ranks as the fourth-largest sand and gravel producer in the United States.

Downgrade Follows a Series of Target Cuts

Today's downgrade follows earlier price target cuts from other research firms and an Underweight call from a separate firm, as well as the company's recent response to activist investor Starboard's letter. Shares are trading near their 52-week low of $49.16 and are down roughly 39% over the past six months.

Broader Materials Sector Holds Steady

The weakness looks stock-specific rather than sector-wide. The Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF traded modestly higher on the session, supported by copper strength and a pause in the Treasury selloff, while the Russell 3000 held near its 52-week high. Among materials peers, aggregates names Vulcan Materials (NYSE:VMC) and Martin Marietta (NYSE:MLM) also saw a research firm trim its price targets, suggesting cost and margin concerns extend beyond Knife River alone.

Outlook: Margin Trajectory and Starboard Involvement in Focus

With elevated Treasury yields and oil prices near $100 keeping cost pressures in view, investors are likely to watch Knife River's contracting margin trajectory and any further developments tied to Starboard's involvement as the next catalysts for the stock.
