Iron ore fines (62% Fe, cost and freight to a Chinese port) were quoted at $91.35 per dry metric tonne on Friday, October 2, 2026, down $0.75, or 0.81%, from a previous close of $92.10. The quote is a delayed market level, not an exchange settlement. It sits at the bottom of a 52-week range of $91.35 to $111.42. BHP (NYSE:BHP), a major Pilbara producer with a large copper business, is the main US-listed name exposed.
A Slow Grind to the Yearly Floor
The move is a gradual slide, not a sudden break. Iron ore is down 8.12% over the past month and 12.47% over twelve months. The Shanghai Futures Exchange is closed for Golden Week from October 1 to 7, so trading is thin and the first post-holiday price signals arrive on October 7.
Other contracts point the same way, though they are different instruments and dates and should not be compared line by line. The Dalian January contract was at 703.5 yuan, down 1.1%, after touching a five-week low of 700 yuan, and the Singapore October contract was at $94.45 per tonne. A physical 62% Fe benchmark of $96.6 per tonne CFR Qingdao on September 25 was 4.2% below September 4.
China’s Mills Face Stockpiles and Output Curbs
China consumes the bulk of seaborne iron ore, so steel output and port stocks matter most. Port inventories rose to 152.17 million tonnes, up 0.76% on the week, while mill profitability declined. Industry data also show producers urged to restrain output, and crude steel production fell 3.7% year on year in August.
Supply is not tight. Rio Tinto reported Pilbara sales of 85.3 million tonnes in the second quarter, up 7% on a year earlier, and kept 2026 Pilbara guidance at 323 to 338 million tonnes on a 100% basis. BHP delivered all-time high iron ore production in the year to June 30, 2026. Guinea’s Simandou project is adding high-grade volumes, and market commentary sees structural downward pressure on prices from it.
Pilbara Majors and the Cost Gap
BHP and Rio Tinto both ship from the Pilbara and also hold copper. Their volumes are strong, so a lower price pressures margins rather than tonnage, and copper gives a Diversification cushion that a pure iron ore Business lacks.
Fortescue is the most concentrated, with all-time high FY26 shipments of 201.3 million tonnes. Its FY26 hematite realized price was $91 per dry metric tonne, 88% of the CFR index, and realization fell to 84% in the fourth quarter. Its hematite C1 cost rose 4% to $18.74 per wet metric tonne, and FY27 guidance is $20.50 to $21.75. If spot prices stay near $91 and costs follow guidance, the gap between price and cost narrows, before freight, grade premiums, currency and Capital spending of $3.7 billion to $4.7 billion.
Champion Iron mines Bloom Lake in Quebec. Its first-quarter FY2027 release reported 3.3 million dry metric tonnes sold at a net realized price of $77.5 per tonne, down 11% on the quarter, at a weighted average grade of 66.5% Fe. It posted a net loss of $41.5 million, including $17.2 million of foreign exchange losses and $17.6 million of derivative adjustments. Its realized price is below the 62% index in dollar terms despite higher grade, so freight, premiums and currency make comparison difficult.
Vale (NYSE:VALE), the Brazilian producer with a US listing, traded at $13.61 on September 25 and is a useful reference for the seaborne market. A lower iron ore price is not uniformly negative, because steel producers that buy ore benefit from cheaper raw material if finished steel prices hold, though Chinese mills are facing weak margins and output curbs.
Stimulus Hopes, Stock Builds and Key Dates
Upside risks include Chinese stimulus or property support, a pickup in steel Demand after Golden Week, firmer mill margins, and Supply disruption from weather or operations. Downside risks include further stock builds, enforced steel output cuts, a faster Simandou ramp-up and weaker economic data.
Golden Week ends on October 7, when Chinese futures trading resumes. Weekly port stock figures and mill profitability data are useful checks on demand, and Chinese September steel output data will test the August decline. Minutes of the Federal Reserve’s September meeting are due on October 7, and its next meeting on October 27 and 28 may influence the dollar and risk appetite, which in turn affect Commodity prices.
