Platinum futures traded below $1,630 an ounce on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, approaching their lowest level in three months amid persistent investment outflows and a bearish long-term outlook. According to market data, the contract was quoted at $1,615.40 (USD), down $55.80, or 3.34%, from a previous level near $1,671.20. Earlier in the session, spot platinum dipped 2% to $1,629.79 per ounce.
Rates Raise the Cost of Holding
Stronger-than-expected US inflation pushed the odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October to nearly 50%, reversing earlier expectations that rates would remain unchanged until December. Higher-for-longer interest rates weigh on non-yielding assets such as platinum by increasing the opportunity cost of holding them.
Demand Forecast Weakens
Over the longer term, the World Platinum Investment Council sees total demand falling 18%. That includes a 32% drop in Chinese jewelry demand and a 4% decline in automotive demand, although resilient demand for hybrids has helped moderate the decline. The drop in demand continues to underpin a bearish outlook as it outpaces the contraction in supply.
Supply Constraints Persist
Supply remains constrained by elevated operating costs and power grid instability in South Africa, alongside ongoing trade risks in Russia. In the United States, Sibanye-Stillwater (NYSE:SBSW) operates the Stillwater Complex in Montana. Platinum demand also draws on proton exchange membrane electrolysers for green hydrogen, heavy diesel autocatalysts and specialty chemical catalysts.
Contract and Price Context
Each platinum futures contract covers 50 troy ounces of 0.9995 fine platinum, a nominal value of about $80,770 at the latest quote. Platinum is down 9.18% over the past month and 3.34% over the past year, implying prices of roughly $1,778.70 a month ago and $1,671.20 twelve months earlier.
Forecast and Risks
Market forecasts point to about $1,766.61 (USD) for the fourth quarter, which is $151.21, or roughly 9.36%, above the latest quote. That forecast sits well above the current bearish consensus on demand, so rates, investment flows and South African output will decide whether prices recover.
Platinum's Narrow Path
Platinum faces falling demand and higher rate expectations at once, while supply constraints limit how far prices can drop. The next Fed signals and quarterly demand data will set the direction.
