Activist Pressure Lifts Shares
Knife River (NYSE:KNF) shares are climbing today as investors digest a public letter from activist investor Starboard Value urging the board to pursue strategic alternatives, including a potential sale of the company. Starboard's letter also called for the company to target a 22% adjusted EBITDA margin by fiscal year 2029 through pricing and cost initiatives, a more ambitious goal than the market had been pricing in.
Company Welcomes Dialogue While Reaffirming Its Own Strategy
Knife River responded by welcoming dialogue with Starboard while reaffirming its existing EDGE margin-improvement strategy, signaling openness to engagement without immediately committing to a sale process. Separately, a research firm trimmed its price target to $80 from $90 while maintaining an Outperform rating, a move that came even as today's stock reaction remained positive.
Bounce Follows a Steep Slide After Mixed Earnings

Knife River is a vertically integrated construction materials and contracting services provider headquartered in Bismarck, North Dakota, Mining and processing over 1.3 billion tons of aggregate reserves used in asphalt, ready-mix concrete and related contracting services across 14 states.
