Invesco Mortgage Capital Inc. (NYSE:IVR)'s second quarter combined a return to profit and a positive economic return with lower Earnings available for distribution per share and lower book value per share than in the first quarter. Chief Executive Kevin Collins described a backdrop in which Interest Rate Volatility declined from March levels, while uncertainty over Monetary Policy and geopolitics persisted.

IVR is a real estate Investment trust that invests in mortgage-backed securities and related assets. It is managed externally by Invesco Advisers, a Subsidiary of Invesco Ltd. At June 30, 2026 the portfolio, including forward purchase contracts known as TBAs, was $8.2 billion: 73.4% agency residential securities, 14.7% agency TBAs and 11.1% agency commercial securities.

Funding comes from repurchase agreements, which are short-term loans secured by the securities. A hedge portfolio of interest rate swaps and Treasury futures covered 97% of those agreements. Management said on the call that about 85% of the portfolio carried some form of prepayment protection.

Second quarter 2026 compared with the first quarter

Total earnings available for distribution were $47.1 million against $44.7 million in the first quarter. The effective interest rate margin, a non-GAAP measure, narrowed to 2.82% from 3.05%, with the average earning asset Yield at 5.15% against 5.36%. Collins attributed the economic return to carry and contracting risk premiums.

Management said the book value decline reflected mainly a modestly positive duration gap as rates rose. Unrestricted cash and unencumbered investments were $548.3 million at June 30. Debt-to-equity was 6.3x against 6.1x at March 31; economic debt-to-equity was unchanged at 7.5x.

IVR issued 14,847,506 common shares through its at-the-market program for net proceeds of $118.0 million. Monthly common dividends totaled $0.36 per share, unchanged from the first quarter. Collins said the Dividend is evaluated each quarter and is well covered by earnings available for distribution at this point; management said it is mindful of swap roll-off.

Management outlook and stated risks

The release described the company's outlook for agency residential and commercial securities as constructive; on the call, management called its stance constructive but measured. Collins said Supply and Demand conditions are favourable because net issuance is expected to be contained. Management said a durable de-escalation in the Middle East could reduce volatility and improve risk sentiment for its target assets.

The company listed Middle East developments, monetary policy and Inflation uncertainty, reduced Federal Reserve forward guidance, which it expects to raise front-end volatility, softer specified pool pay-ups, and the effect of swap roll-off on earnings available for distribution. Its house view is that the Federal Reserve holds policy steady, with an increase in late 2026 possible.

Investment Takeaway

Management returned to two themes on the call: the effect of swap roll-off on earnings available for distribution, and share issuance, which it said continued in July at prices near book value and which it plans to continue when windows of opportunity allow. It also said monthly updates will include the share count, and that softer specified pool pay-ups, which it listed among its risks, are also an opportunity to add exposure. IVR's September dividend is payable on October 15, 2026.
