- New 210,000-dwt ammonia-powered vessel to be delivered by end of 2026
- Part of CMB.TECH’s broader effort to decarbonise large dry bulk shipping
- Supports Fortescue’s Net Zero Scope 3 emissions goal for shipping by 2040
CMB.TECH NV (NYSE: CMBT & Euronext: CMBT) has signed a charter agreement with Fortescue for a 210,000-deadweight ton (dwt) Newcastlemax dry bulk vessel powered by ammonia. The agreement involves Bocimar, the shipping division of CMB.TECH, and forms part of a larger fleet currently under construction at Qingdao Beihai Shipyard in China. The vessel is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.
This vessel will feature a dual-fuel engine capable of running on ammonia, a zero-carbon fuel alternative. The ship is intended to transport iron ore from Fortescue’s operations in the Pilbara region of Western Australia to global markets, including China. The charter aligns with Fortescue’s decarbonisation goals, particularly its ambition to achieve Net Zero Scope 3 emissions by 2040.
The broader strategy reflects growing momentum in the maritime industry to move away from traditional bunker fuels, which account for roughly 3% of global carbon emissions. Fortescue has publicly rejected transitional fuels like LNG and biofuels in favour of zero-emission options, positioning green ammonia as a long-term solution.
This latest agreement builds on Fortescue’s existing efforts, including the deployment of the Fortescue Green Pioneer, the world’s first ammonia-powered dual-fuel vessel. Currently docked in London, the ship is set to tour major ports to highlight zero-emission technologies and fuel alternatives.
