Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) spent Thursday, October 22, 2026, on the wrong side of a market that suddenly wanted less exposure to the artificial-intelligence build-out. The maker of optical-networking and AI-datacenter components was trading at $217.69, down 8.35%, and its slide was less a comment on the company than an echo of a broad retreat across the chip-and-AI complex. No company-specific release lay behind the move; the stock simply traded in step with a group that was being sold with conviction.
Pain Concentrated in Technology
The day's tone was set by a selloff that was deep in places and shallow in others. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended just about unchanged, up 11.89 points at 52,867.98, while the S&P 500 lost 1.21% to 7,663.45 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.60% to 26,008.86. That split is the whole story in miniature: the pain was concentrated in technology and semiconductors, not distributed across the market. A company whose fortunes are tied to optical components for data centers and AI networking belongs to exactly the cohort that bore the brunt.
Big Tech Earnings Rattle the AI Trade
The catalyst for the mood shift came from the top of the technology sector. Renewed worries about the AI trade surfaced after earnings from Meta (NASDAQ:META) and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA). Meta fell roughly 7% despite strong quarterly results and a two-for-one split announcement, while Tesla finished off about 3% even after beating expectations, as the market chewed over a lighter near-term capital-spending plan set against heftier outlays promised for later years. The underlying anxiety was about whether the enormous sums being committed to AI infrastructure will be justified, and how soon. For a components supplier levered to that very infrastructure, that is not an abstract debate.
The selling then swept through the semiconductor and AI-hardware names, and it carried real technical weight. Chip stocks broke below a key support level during the session, the sort of breakdown that tends to intensify declines as momentum turns negative. The heaviest losses landed on equipment makers, with Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) down around 9% and Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) and KLA (NASDAQ:KLAC) off roughly 6%, while a range of other chip names fell four to five percent and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) slipped about 2%. CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV), a name closely associated with AI compute, dropped about 10% on concerns tied to its cost of capital. Coherent's descent fit naturally into this landscape of AI-linked hardware under pressure.
Sympathy Selling in Optical Space
This was a sector move rather than a company event. Coherent reported nothing, guided nothing and announced nothing that could be identified as a driver. Its decline is best understood as sympathy selling within the optical and AI-datacenter space, a case of a stock being repriced because sentiment toward the entire AI hardware chain deteriorated in a single session. The optical-networking business is the key to its placement: it sits in the connective tissue of AI data centers, and that proximity cut against it on a day when investors were trimming AI exposure wholesale.
Suppliers Feel the AI Spending Debate
Elsewhere the market offered crosscurrents that did Coherent no favors. Treasury yields fell, with the ten-year down about eleven basis points toward five percent, lifting rate-sensitive groups such as homebuilders and real estate rather than AI hardware. Oil surged to its highest since May on Middle East tensions, and gold and silver posted one of their sharpest single-day drops in years. Those moves rearranged leadership within the market but left no lifeline for a name caught in the AI-capex unwind. For Coherent, Thursday was a reminder that when the market reconsiders the pace of AI spending, the suppliers plumbed into that spending feel it immediately, release or no release.
