Logitech International (Nasdaq: LOGI) has made substantial progress in its initiative to eliminate plastic clamshell packaging in its popular mice product categories. The company has transitioned to paper packaging, with the process nearly 90% complete. This significant move is estimated to remove 660 tons of plastic from circulation annually, resulting in a reduction of 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions—equivalent to eliminating over 37 million single-use plastic water bottles every year.
The global switch to paper packaging affects tens of millions of Logitech products, and the transition is expected to be finalized by the end of 2025 across various retailers. This initiative is part of the company's broader sustainability efforts aimed at reducing its environmental footprint.
Delphine Donné, General Manager of the Personal Workspace Solutions business group at Logitech, noted that this transition is the company's largest packaging change to date. Prior to this shift, Logitech had already reduced its packaging waste by 1,800 tons through design modifications. The company’s aim is to eventually eliminate all single-use plastics from its product portfolio, marking a critical milestone in its sustainability journey.
A study by GlobeScan, in collaboration with Logitech, revealed that 61% of consumers globally are interested in opting for recyclable packaging within the next year. This insight aligns with the company's effort to move away from single-use plastics, as mixed-material and plastic packaging often contribute to confusion around recyclability.
