Samsara Inc. (NYSE: IOT), a leader in connected operations, has unveiled its new Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS) as part of the company’s Smart Trailer solution. The EBPMS is designed to assist fleet operators in meeting the upcoming guidelines set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), which will take effect in April 2025. Under these new regulations, fleets will be required to perform four laden brake performance assessments annually using roller brake tests (RBTs), a process that can be time-consuming and costly.
Samsara’s EBPMS, however, offers a potential solution to reduce the frequency of these physical tests by continuously monitoring the brake performance data throughout the year. This system eliminates the need for frequent manual testing, providing fleet operators with a way to stay compliant without the disruptions caused by traditional assessments.
The system uses real-time data from the trailer’s electronic braking system (EBS) and can be monitored via Samsara's Asset Gateway. This approach helps to identify any braking issues before they escalate, reducing the risk of costly failures and minimizing vehicle downtime. Fleet operators could potentially save up to £1,200 per trailer annually, making the solution an attractive option for companies looking to optimize both safety and cost-efficiency.
Fleet managers such as Simon Colderley of Fox Brothers, a Lancashire-based haulage company, have expressed interest in the system’s ability to streamline compliance efforts. The ability to import brake performance data directly into the system is expected to save significant time, particularly for fleets operating nationwide. Similarly, Lee Wills from Conway Bailey Transport Ltd highlighted the simplicity of Samsara’s plug-and-play solution, which reduces the complexity of managing multiple systems.
