VIAVI Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAV) and fiber network software provider 3-GIS have announced a strategic integration aimed at improving the accuracy and efficiency of fiber fault detection across enterprise and carrier networks. The collaboration combines VIAVI’s ONMSi Remote Fiber Test System (RFTS) with 3-GIS’s geospatial technology to automate previously manual network maintenance processes.
The combined solution is currently operational at Windstream Wholesale, which has integrated the platform into its Intelligent Converged Optical Network (ICON). The integration enables automatic detection of fiber impairments, including full or partial cuts, while also streamlining technician dispatch and reducing average repair time.
Fiber network construction and maintenance continue to be capital-intensive and sensitive to performance degradation, especially as demand increases from AI, high-performance computing, and broader broadband expansion. Even small delays in detecting issues can lead to extended service interruptions and financial penalties for network operators.
The VIAVI-3-GIS platform addresses this challenge by correlating fault alarms with precise geospatial data, allowing service providers to locate problems quickly and assign the appropriate resources without delay. The system also enables proactive customer communication by identifying impacted clients immediately, before the customer becomes aware of a service issue.
By using a shared data environment, the integration eliminates discrepancies often found between test system alerts and GIS records. This unified view improves service level agreement (SLA) performance and enhances response times during outages. According to Windstream Wholesale, the solution has led to measurable reductions in operational costs and minimized the need for repeated technician dispatches.
