What put Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) among Friday's most-active stocks was not news from Cupertino but a sharp sell-off across technology shares, arriving just one trading day before the iPhone maker reports results. Apple closed down 1.23% at $344.63 on Friday, October 30, 2026, on Volume of about 67.8 million shares, roughly 1.64 times its usual level, according to market data. At a Market Value of about $5.03 trillion, Apple remains one of the two largest companies in the US market alongside Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), and heavy turnover in both reflected funds trimming broad technology exposure.
A tech sell-off with a memory twist
The day's damage started with Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), whose weak fourth-quarter forecast triggered a broad chip sell-off. The closing market wrap showed the Nasdaq Composite down 2.84% and the S&P 500 down 1.83%, while the S&P 500 technology sector fell nearly 5%. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s negative free Cash Flow and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)'s AI spending added to worries about the cost of the artificial intelligence buildout. Apple, with less direct exposure to Data Center Capital spending, fell far less than chipmakers.
There was still a link to Apple's business. Intel blamed weak PC Demand partly on industry-wide pressure from higher memory prices, and expects PC unit volumes to fall about 12% this year. Memory is a significant component cost in iPhones and Macs, and a market preview published on October 29 listed rising memory costs, along with chip Supply constraints and unfavourable currency movements, among Apple's near-term headwinds. Another preview noted that AI data center expansion is absorbing memory chip capacity and pushing up DRAM and NAND prices. Intel's warning was a reminder that those costs are already hurting some device makers.
Earnings on Monday
Apple reports fiscal fourth-quarter results after the market closes on Monday, November 2, according to Earnings previews. It will be the first quarterly call hosted by John Ternus, who became chief executive on September 1, 2026, succeeding Tim Cook, who became executive chairman, according to market reports.
Apple's own guidance calls for Revenue growth of 9% to 11% year over year, with foreign exchange reducing growth by about 2.5 percentage points sequentially, and gross margin of 47% to 48%, including about one point of benefit from Tariff refunds, market reports said. The company expects iPhone revenue to grow in the mid-teens and warned that supply constraints will intensify across iPhone, Mac and iPad. Consensus revenue stands at $112.95 billion and earnings at $1.98 a share. Market Analysis said Options were implying a 3.47% one-day move around the release.
What Apple does
Apple designs and sells the iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and other devices, along with a large and highly profitable services Business spanning the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, Advertising and payments. Market reports noted that Apple's installed base exceeds 2.5 billion active devices and that paid subscriptions exceed 1.5 billion, giving its services unit a Recurring Revenue stream that is less exposed to hardware cycles.
Recent results
In its last report, for the fiscal third quarter ended June 27, 2026, Apple posted revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16% year over year, and diluted earnings of $2.02 a share, up 29%, according to its newsroom release. Gross margin was 50.1%, including about two points of benefit from tariff refunds, and earnings included an 11-cent favourable impact from those refunds. iPhone, Mac and Services each set June quarter records. Cook said at the time: "Today, Apple is proud to report our strongest June quarter ever." Market reports noted that iPhone revenue grew 22% in that quarter.
Chief financial officer Kevan Parekh added: "We are very pleased with our record business performance during the quarter." Apple also declared a quarterly Dividend of $0.27 a share and said Operating Cash Flow set a June quarter record, while its installed base of active devices reached an all-time high.
Valuation
Apple is the most expensive of the largest US technology stocks on trailing earnings. At 39.51 times trailing earnings of $8.72 per share, according to market data, it trades above Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) at 27.26 times, Nvidia at 25.87 times, Amazon at 19.43 times and Alphabet's Class C shares at 14.52 times. A market preview put Apple's forward price-to-earnings ratio at 35.43 times, against 19.39 times for its computer and technology sector, and assigned the stock a Hold rating. Market reports also said the shares were up 26.5% year to date before the earnings report, and market analysis noted they recently hit a record high of $351.73.
The bull case
Bulls point to steady execution and a strong product cycle. Market analysis, citing consensus data, said Apple has beaten consensus on revenue and adjusted earnings for eight straight quarters. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max launched on September 18, and the analysis said the iPhone Duo has drawn an enthusiastic response. Services, with gross margins around 75.6% last quarter according to market analysis, can help offset hardware cost pressure. Apple's scale may also allow it to secure memory supply and absorb price increases better than smaller device makers.
The bear case
Bears argue the valuation leaves little room for disappointment. Guidance implies gross margin falling from 50.1% to 47% to 48%, and memory cost Inflation could weigh further in coming quarters. Market analysis cited reports that Apple asked some suppliers to cut iPhone 18 Pro component orders, and said iPhone 18 Pro delivery lead times in China have shortened, with some E-commerce platforms discounting. A Leadership transition adds uncertainty, and investors may want to hear how Ternus frames strategy and capital returns.
Monday's Earnings Under Ternus
Monday's report is the immediate catalyst. Investors will focus on iPhone revenue against the mid-teens growth guidance, gross margin relative to the 47% to 48% range, and any commentary on memory costs and supply constraints for the holiday quarter. Guidance for the December quarter, Services growth, China demand and Ternus's first remarks as chief executive will all matter. Nvidia's results on November 17 will then offer another read on the AI trade that has been driving swings across the largest technology stocks. Market analysis flagged $340 as a level traders are watching, with Friday's close sitting just above it.
