JetBlue Airways Corporation (NASDAQ:JBLU)'s second quarter combined higher Operating Revenue and unit revenue growth with a wider operating loss, as operating costs rose faster than revenue. Management said the company recaptured nearly 50% of higher fuel costs during the quarter, which it said exceeded its own prior expectation of at least 40% recapture.
JBLU operates a passenger airline serving destinations across the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada and Europe, with hub operations concentrated in the New York metropolitan area, Boston, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, Los Angeles, Orlando and San Juan. The company also operates smaller non-airline businesses, including its travel-products unit, Paisly, and its venture arm, JetBlue Technology Ventures.
The airline reported an average of 294 operating aircraft and 19,847 average full-time equivalent crewmembers during the quarter, flying 17,170 million available seat miles at a load Factor of 82.7%. Revenue is drawn mainly from passenger ticket sales, supplemented by other revenue including loyalty, cargo and ancillary products.
Second quarter 2026 compared with the prior-year quarter
Total operating expenses rose to $2,838 million from $2,350 million, an increase the company's 10-Q attributed primarily to higher fuel prices. Aircraft fuel expense rose to $911 million from $504 million, as the average fuel price increased to $4.23 per gallon from $2.40, an increase of approximately 76%. The operating loss widened to $141 million from an Operating Income of $6 million a year earlier, and the pre-tax loss widened to $271 million from $94 million.
RASM rose 10.9% year over year while CASM increased 17.0% and CASM ex-fuel rose 2.4%, driven by increases in salaries, wages and benefits, landing fees and other rents, and maintenance, materials and repairs. Load factor was 82.7% against 81.9% a year earlier, as capacity increased 3.2%. Special items, which affected the prior-year quarter, were absent in the current period.
Cash and cash equivalents were $1,656 million at June 30, 2026, against $1,946 million at December 31, 2025. Total Debt was $8,478 million against $8,498 million, and stockholders' Equity was $1,587 million against $2,120 million at year-end 2025. Capital expenditures, including predelivery deposits, were $234 million in the quarter, bringing the six-month total to $375 million against $496 million in the prior-year period.
Management outlook and stated risks
Management said it introduced a long-term target of at least $1.00 of Earnings Per Share for 2028, which it said assumes continued Demand strength and an average jet fuel price of $3.00 per gallon. Chief Executive Joanna Geraghty said JetForward remains on track to deliver its previously announced $850 million to $950 million of annual incremental EBIT by year-end 2027, building toward approximately $1.2 billion in 2028.
In its September update, management said it raised third-quarter revenue guidance, citing continued demand strength and a more constructive pricing environment, while it also raised third-quarter cost guidance, citing fuel prices that remained elevated relative to its prior outlook and operational disruption from weather and air traffic control constraints concentrated in its Northeast network. Management said early fourth-quarter booking trends remained encouraging.
Conclusion
Management has tied several themes to the coming months: the fall launch of BlueFirst, the carrier's new domestic first class product, and continued progress on its Blue Sky reciprocal loyalty partnership. In its August 24, 2026 release, JetBlue said it opened a new airport lounge at Boston Logan's Terminal C on August 27, 2026, expanding complimentary lounge access to domestic Mint and Mint Flex fares. Reports citing Massachusetts Port Authority approval said JetBlue is advancing a large-scale redevelopment of the same terminal with development partner Vantage Airport Group.
