NANO Nuclear Energy (NASDAQ:NNE) jumped on Tuesday, October 6, climbing to around $16.79 during the session. The company, a Russell 2000 member, did not have company-specific news. The move was tied to the sector-wide rally sparked by Constellation Energy's (NASDAQ:CEG) new agreement with Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL).
NANO Nuclear is an early-stage company working on small, portable nuclear reactors, often called microreactors, along with related fuel and services businesses. Its reactors are still in development, so its shares tend to move with investor enthusiasm for advanced nuclear technology and with news about Demand for clean, round-the-clock electricity.
The Deal That Moved the Group
Constellation Energy rocketed after announcing a 20-year power purchase agreement with Google covering 3,590 megawatts in total. That includes 890 megawatts of new capacity from upgrades at 11 reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, plus about 2,700 megawatts from existing plants under a 15-year Supply portion. Constellation plans to invest more than $4.3 billion, with the first upgrades expected by 2028.
It was Constellation's second deal with a tech giant in a week, following a 690-megawatt agreement with Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) on September 30. Constellation CEO Joe Dominguez said the agreement could serve as a model for how technology companies and the energy industry work together to responsibly develop the digital economy.
For smaller nuclear developers, such deals matter because they show that large technology companies are willing to sign long contracts for nuclear power. Investors often read that as a sign of future demand for new reactor designs, even though companies like NANO Nuclear are still developing their reactors.
A Broad Nuclear Rally
The enthusiasm spread widely. Oklo (NYSE:OKLO) rose to around $38.81 and NuScale Power (NYSE:SMR) to about $8.20, while uranium-focused Exchange-traded funds also climbed. BWX Technologies (NYSE:BWXT) gained after its microreactor design was selected for a transportable nuclear project in Canada, and Centrus Energy (NYSE:LEU), a nuclear fuel supplier, rallied. Power producers Vistra (NYSE:VST), Talen Energy (NASDAQ:TLN) and NRG Energy (NYSE:NRG) also jumped.
Utilities were the strongest sector in the S&P 500. The index itself rose 44.98 points to a record 7,818.93, and the Nasdaq Composite closed at a record just under 27,600. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 253.38 points to 51,521.28. The small-cap Russell 2000, however, fell to about 2,830, making NANO Nuclear's gain more striking against a weak day for smaller stocks.
Development-stage nuclear names can be volatile. Their shares often swing sharply on industry headlines, and gains driven by a sector theme can reverse when attention shifts elsewhere.
Licensing Progress Will Be the Real Driver
Investors will watch for further power deals between tech companies and energy producers, which could keep the nuclear theme in focus. Regulatory milestones for advanced reactor designs, including licensing progress, are another key Factor for developers like NANO Nuclear.
