Southwest Gas Holdings (NYSE:SWX) reported second-quarter 2026 results on 5 August 2026, and the numbers look very different from a year earlier because the Centuri construction business is no longer part of continuing operations. The company said net income from continuing operations was $42.1 million, or $0.58 per diluted share. Adjusted net income from continuing operations was $32.4 million, or $0.45 per share. Six-month net income stood at $180.5 million, or $2.49 per diluted share. A secondary market-data summary of the release reports revenue of $358.2 million against $396.3 million a year earlier and a prior-year quarterly net loss of $40.2 million. Those comparatives come from the secondary source and were not checked against the filing.
Where the earnings came from
The release attributes $40.8 million of quarterly net income to Natural Gas Distribution, the regulated utility at the core of the group. Corporate and administrative activities contributed $1.4 million, compared with a $46.4 million loss a year earlier. Readers should note that the swing at the corporate level, rather than a step-change in utility earnings, explains much of the improvement in the headline figure. That distinction matters for interpretation. Reported net income of $42.1 million exceeds the adjusted figure of $32.4 million, so the gap between the two measures deserves attention when comparing the company with peers that report on a more conventional basis.
Management guidance and the pipeline project
Management reaffirmed full-year 2026 earnings guidance from continuing operations of $4.17 to $4.32 per share. It also reiterated planned 2026 capital expenditure of about $1.25 billion and a 2026 to 2030 programme of $6.3 billion. The company guided to a rate base compound annual growth rate of 9.5% to 11.5% from a 2025 base of $6.7 billion, and adjusted earnings per share growth of 12.0% to 14.0% over the same period. The Great Basin 2028 Expansion project is the most distinctive element. Binding precedent agreements now total roughly 1 Bcf per day, and management estimates capital investment of about $2.3 billion with annual margin of $270 million to $300 million once in service. The company said the long-term guidance excludes that updated estimate, and that it expects to file a FERC certificate application later in 2026. These are management projections, not reported results.
Corporate-Level Swing, Not Utility Growth, Drove the Headline Gain
Southwest Gas Holdings' year-over-year comparisons now exclude the divested Centuri construction business, and most of the quarter's earnings improvement came from a corporate-level swing rather than a step-change in utility earnings, which is worth separating when judging underlying performance. The Great Basin pipeline project, with binding precedent agreements now totaling roughly 1 Bcf per day, is the most distinctive item on the horizon, though a FERC certificate application is still pending and the company's long-term guidance has not yet incorporated the updated $2.3 billion cost estimate.
