Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) announced its second-quarter 2026 results on 18 August 2026, and the report describes a company whose growth and decline are happening in different parts of the same business. Its artificial intelligence-powered operations grew, its traditional online marketing revenue fell, and total revenue ended the quarter lower than a year earlier. Chief executive Robin Li said the AI-powered Business is "now firmly established as the core of Baidu".

What Baidu does

Baidu is a Chinese internet and technology group best known for its search engine. Its American depositary shares trade on Nasdaq, and it also has a Hong Kong listing. Historically the group earned most of its income from online marketing, where advertisers pay to reach users of its search and related services. In recent years it has expanded into AI cloud infrastructure, which rents computing capacity and AI services to customers, and into AI-native marketing services. The sector therefore spans advertising, Cloud Computing and AI platforms, all of which are competitive in China.

Segment results for the quarter

All figures below are in Chinese renminbi, as reported. Total revenue was RMB31.3 billion, down 4% from a year before. Baidu General Business revenue was RMB25.2 billion, also down 4%, and within it the Baidu Core AI-powered business contributed RMB12.5 billion, up 25%. The release indicates that the AI-powered business now accounts for half of General Business revenue.

The detail by line is uneven. AI Cloud Infrastructure revenue was RMB7.3 billion, up 50%. AI-native Marketing Services revenue was RMB2.6 billion, flat on the year. Online Marketing Services revenue was RMB13.1 billion, down 19%. The balance between those lines helps explain why a fast-growing segment did not lift the total. Demand for cloud capacity linked to AI has been a feature of the technology industry more broadly, and growth of 50% suggests Baidu is participating in it, though the release does not quantify capacity or customer numbers.

Profit, cash and balance sheet

Operating income under GAAP was RMB3.0 billion, down 8%, and non-GAAP Operating Income was RMB3.8 billion, down 15%. The gap of roughly RMB0.8 billion between the two measures reflects items the company excludes from its non-GAAP figure. Net income attributable to Baidu was RMB2.3 billion, down 68%. The release does not explain the larger fall in net income.

Cash generation improved sharply. Operating Cash Flow was RMB3.4 billion, compared with an outflow of RMB877 million in the second quarter of 2025. Total cash and investments at 30 June 2026 were RMB283.1 billion, which the company equated to about US$41.7 billion. Those reserves give the group considerable room to continue investing in AI infrastructure, although the sources reviewed do not set out its spending plans.

Baidu's Balancing Act Between AI and Ads

The principal uncertainty is whether growth in AI-related revenue can outweigh the contraction in online marketing over time. A decline of 19% in the largest legacy line is a significant drag, and a flat result in AI-native marketing shows that not every AI initiative is expanding. Competition in Chinese AI and cloud services, regulatory conditions, and the Capital intensity of building AI infrastructure are further factors that could influence results.

Readers following the company may watch the share of revenue from AI-powered activities, the trajectory of Online Marketing Services, the relationship between non-GAAP operating income and net income, and the use of the large cash balance. Because conversions between renminbi and US dollars depend on the Exchange Rate used, comparisons should rely on the renminbi figures the company reports. The next quarterly announcement will show whether these trends continue or reverse.
