Bright Horizons (NYSE:BFAM) met revenue estimates and beat on profit, but a lower full-year forecast sent the child-care provider's shares sliding in extended trading on Thursday.
In line, then lowered
Bright Horizons Family Solutions, which runs employer-sponsored child care centres, backup care and education advisory services, reported third-quarter revenue of $841.5 million after the closing bell on Thursday, October 29. That matched what analysts had expected. Adjusted earnings of $1.80 a share topped the $1.76 consensus.
The guidance was the sticking point. Bright Horizons cut the midpoint of its full-year revenue outlook to $3.07 billion from $3.1 billion and lowered its full-year earnings midpoint to $5.01 a share, according to market data.
The stock slid in after-hours trading on the news, falling to $62.58 and joining the list of S&P MidCap 400 names that moved lower in the extended session.
Management's take
Chief executive Stephen Kramer struck an upbeat tone, saying, "Our third quarter results reflect the strength of our diversified portfolio." The company's mix of full-service child care, backup care for working parents and advisory services gives it several revenue streams, which management sees as a source of resilience.
The market, though, keyed on the reduced outlook. A lower full-year revenue midpoint suggests some part of the Business is running slightly below plan, and when that is paired with a lower earnings target, investors tend to reprice the stock quickly.
A modest cut with an outsized reaction
The revenue revision itself was relatively small in dollar terms, roughly $30 million at the midpoint. But for a company whose shares trade on expectations of steady, predictable growth, even a modest downgrade can trigger a sharp move. Investors had little beyond the headline revisions to go on Thursday night, which put extra weight on the numbers themselves and left the stock exposed to a quick repricing.
A tough night for after-hours reporters
Bright Horizons was one of many companies to report after the close and receive a cool reception. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) fell sharply in extended trading and pulled Nasdaq-100 futures lower, while Twilio (NYSE:TWLO), Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) and Roblox (NYSE:RBLX) each tumbled. Stryker (NYSE:SYK) also dropped after hours on light revenue and guidance. Among mid-caps, World Kinect (NYSE:WKC) also slid after hours despite beating expectations.
A strong regular session for most stocks
The after-hours slide followed a regular session that was strong beneath the surface. The S&P 500 slipped 23.59 points to 7,720.39 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 365.13 points to 26,184.72 as Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) suffered its worst day since its 2004 IPO. Yet more than 400 S&P 500 members closed higher, and the Russell 2000 rose 28.71 points to 2,859.22.
The economic data had mixed implications for a child-care provider. A strong labour market is generally supportive of Demand for employer-sponsored care, and Fed chair Kevin Warsh described labour market conditions as "quite positive" on Wednesday. But hot September PCE Inflation can pressure family budgets and wage costs, and markets continued to price a possible December rate hike.
What to watch
Friday's regular session will show whether the after-hours decline holds. Extended-trading moves can be volatile and are often revised once full Liquidity returns.
Investors will want more detail on what drove the lower revenue outlook, including any commentary on centre enrolment and demand for backup care, and whether it reflects a particular segment or broader softness. The revised midpoints of $3.07 billion in revenue and $5.01 in Earnings Per Share are now the benchmarks for the fourth quarter. Friday's Employment Cost Index, which tracks labour costs, will also be relevant for a business with a large workforce.
