Nike (NYSE:NKE) bounced on Thursday, though one market report found no hard news behind the gain for a stock that has been weighed down by China weakness and price-target cuts.
A rebound without a headline
Nike rose to about $38.37 on October 29 from a prior close of $37.15, according to that report. The move made the athletic-wear company one of the better performers among Dow components on a day when the Blue-Chip average itself slipped. A market headline listed Nike alongside Merck (NYSE:MRK) among the Dow's leading gainers.
The report said there was no hard news behind the rise. The company has, however, launched its Vegam Run running shoe in India, an expansion in one of the world's most populous countries. One brokerage also kept its Buy rating on the stock, the report noted.
A stock under pressure
The bounce came after a difficult stretch for Nike's shares. The stock has been depressed by weakness in China, a key growth market, and by a series of analyst price-target cuts, according to the same report. Earlier in October, one brokerage cut its target to $32, and another lowered its target to $24.
With no hard news, Thursday's gain came as a rebound in a beaten-down stock rather than as a reaction to new financial results. Still, the launch in India is a reminder of Nike's efforts to expand in fast-growing markets as it navigates headwinds elsewhere.
Riding the rotation
Nike was part of a broader move into beaten-down consumer names. Home Depot (NYSE:HD) also rose on Thursday, as investors rotated away from mega-cap technology stocks. The rally was broad: more than 400 S&P 500 members rose, and NYSE advancers outnumbered decliners by 1.95 to 1, according to market data.
The headline indexes told a different story. The Dow fell 132.54 points to 52,342.56, dragged by Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT)'s worst day since March 2020. The S&P 500 slipped 23.59 points to 7,720.39, and the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 365.13 points to 26,184.72, as Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) suffered its worst day since its 2004 IPO, erasing about $500 billion of market value.
"There's plenty of other places to go with your money outside of the AI trade that have pretty decent prospects," one market strategist said.
Consumers and inflation
The economic backdrop for consumer companies was mixed. Third-quarter GDP grew faster than economists expected and accelerated from the second quarter, with consumer spending holding up, according to the government's advance estimate.
But Inflation remains a headwind. September PCE inflation ran hotter than in August, driven in part by a jump in energy and gasoline prices. Higher costs at the pump can squeeze discretionary spending on items like sneakers and apparel.
The Federal Reserve held rates steady on Wednesday, with two officials dissenting in favour of a hike, and markets lean toward another increase in December. Fed Chair Warsh said Americans are "still dealing with inflation that has been running above the committee's objective."
Elsewhere in footwear, Crocs (NASDAQ:CROX) soared on Thursday after beating Earnings estimates and raising its full-year outlook for the third time, showing that investors were willing to reward companies in the sector that delivered strong results.
What to watch
Investors will look for signs of stabilisation in China, where weakness has weighed on Nike's results and shares. The reception of new products such as the Vegam Run and progress in markets like India will be watched as potential sources of growth.
Analyst sentiment will also be key. After a series of price-target cuts earlier in October, any further revisions could influence the stock. The holiday shopping season, a critical period for sportswear sales, and Nike's next earnings report will be the next major tests.
