Net Income Grows Sharply on Diversified Business Lines
UMB Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:UMBF) reported third quarter net income available to common shareholders of USD 272.3 million, or USD 3.56 per diluted share, an increase of 51.0% compared with USD 180.4 million, or USD 2.36 per diluted share, in the third quarter of 2025. Net operating income, a non-GAAP measure, was USD 272.4 million, or USD 3.56 per diluted share, roughly flat with the linked quarter's USD 273.0 million.
Total revenue was USD 772.4 million for the quarter. Net interest margin on a fully taxable equivalent basis was 3.32%, up 28 basis points from the third quarter of 2025, while noninterest income increased 14.3% to USD 232.4 million.
Record Loan Production Drives Balance Sheet Growth
Gross loan production reached a record USD 3.1 billion during the quarter, with net loan growth, after payoffs and paydowns, totaling USD 1.4 billion. Average commercial and industrial loan balances increased approximately 22% on a linked-quarter annualized basis, driving an 11% annualized increase in total average loans compared with the prior quarter.
Operating pre-tax, pre-provision income was USD 373.0 million, or USD 4.88 per diluted share, a 27.2% increase compared with the third quarter of 2025, though a 1.8% decrease on a linked-quarter basis. The company's results reflect the continued integration of Heartland Financial USA, which it acquired on January 31, 2025.
Asset Quality Continues to Improve
Nonperforming loans declined approximately USD 10 million to USD 118 million, or 28 basis points of total loans, as of September 30, 2026, compared with 31 basis points as of June 30, 2026. This improvement in credit quality metrics accompanied the quarter's record loan production, suggesting growth was not achieved at the expense of underwriting discipline.
Continued record loan production at the pace seen this quarter could support further net interest income growth, while the year over year comparisons continue to reflect the full impact of the Heartland Financial acquisition, which was only partially reflected in the 2025 comparison period.
Loan Growth and Credit Metrics to Track
Gross loan production relative to the record USD 3.1 billion reported this quarter, continued improvement in nonperforming loan levels relative to the 28 basis points reported this period, and net interest margin trends relative to the 3.32% this quarter are among the items the company has flagged for investors.
