A GAAP loss alongside a steadier adjusted result

PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust (NYSE:PMT), a mortgage real estate investment trust that invests primarily in residential mortgage loans and mortgage-related assets, reported third quarter 2026 results on October 29, 2026. Net loss attributable to common shareholders was $36 million, or $0.41 per diluted share, compared with income of $20 million, or $0.23, in the second quarter and $48 million, or $0.55, in the third quarter of 2025.

Why Book Value slipped about 5%

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David Spector described a quarter of widening mortgage spreads and sharply rising benchmark interest rates, which pressured the net Fair Value of portfolio assets. Book value per share ended at $14.03, versus $14.83 in June and $15.16 a year earlier.

The Credit sensitive strategies segment posted a pretax loss of $42 million, as subordinate bonds from private label securitizations lost $48 million on wider credit spreads and higher rates. Income excluding market-driven value changes in that segment was $12 million.

Servicing rights and rate-sensitive assets

The Interest Rate sensitive segment earned $36 million pretax, compared with $9 million in the prior quarter and $32 million a year ago. The mortgage servicing rights asset was valued at $3.5 billion on $192 billion of underlying unpaid principal balance, with the Agency MBS portfolio at $4.3 billion.

Net Loan servicing fees were $242 million, helped by $210 million of fair value gains on servicing rights. Net losses on investments for the segment were $118 million, mainly on mortgage-backed securities as rates rose.

Rotation into private label securitizations

The company has sold or contracted to sell $35 billion in unpaid principal balance of servicing rights, including a $13 billion sale in the quarter, to redeploy Capital into private label securitization investments it expects to deliver low-to-mid-teens returns on equity. It completed eight securitizations in the quarter with a combined $2.9 billion in unpaid principal balance and retained $167 million of senior and subordinate investments.

Correspondent loan purchases fell 53% from the prior quarter to $1.2 billion, while $2.1 billion of loans came from the production of PennyMac Financial Services (NYSE:PFSI), the trust's manager's parent. The aggregation and securitization segment earned $2 million pretax, down from $11 million.

Smaller dividend, larger buyback, new CFO

Management said the stock trades at a steep discount to book value and that it expects to decrease its current Dividend in favor of share repurchases. The board raised the repurchase authorization by $130 million, and projected run-rate return potential increased to $0.38 per share.

Leadership changes were also announced. Kevin Ryan becomes Chief Financial Officer effective January 1, 2027, and President Doug Jones will retire on June 30, 2027. Investors will watch the size of the dividend cut and the pace of buybacks.
