APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) shares were trading near their 52-week high at USD 49.78 on October 19, 2026, up 1.28%. The Houston-based oil and gas producer reported second-quarter results on August 5 and, in an October 7 update, said it bought back 10.5 million shares in the third quarter. Large brokerages have updated ratings and targets since the results, and the filings also describe several legal and regulatory matters.
Six brokerages, none above neutral
Goldman Sachs reiterated Sell on October 1, with a $44 target from $43. UBS kept Neutral on October 12 and moved its target to $52 from $47. Wells Fargo held Equal Weight on October 14 with a $51 target, up from $50. On October 15, Morgan Stanley held Underweight at $43 from $41, RBC Capital Markets held Sector Perform at $49 from $47, and Mizuho held Underperform at $44 from $36. The price sits above four of the six targets and below those of UBS and Wells Fargo. Each target is that firm's own view.
Second-quarter earnings, cash flow and a smaller debt load
For the second quarter of 2026, the company reported GAAP net income attributable to common stock of $747 million, or $2.11 per diluted share, up from $603 million, or $1.67. Adjusted earnings, a non-GAAP measure, were $669 million, or $1.89 per diluted share. Reported production averaged about 410,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, down 12% from a year earlier, while adjusted production, which excludes Egypt noncontrolling interest and tax barrels, was about 347,000, above guidance.
Operating cash flow was $1.7 billion, and free cash flow, also non-GAAP, was $738 million. Cash stood at $444 million on June 30, against total debt of $3.7 billion. The company repaid $752 million of near-term bonds in the first half and says total debt is down $2.3 billion since year-end 2024.
Not everything improved. The U.S. realized natural gas price was negative at $(2.98) per Mcf versus $1.03 a year earlier, and derivative instruments produced a net loss of $105 million in the first six months of 2026, against a $110 million gain in the same period of 2025.
Buybacks, the Alaska agreement and disclosed risks
The company returned $189 million to shareholders through dividends and buybacks in the second quarter and expects to return at least 60% of 2026 free cash flow. In the October 7 update, which management described as current estimates, it said it repurchased 10.5 million shares in the third quarter at an average of $42.78, after 2.8 million shares at $35.26 in the second.
It has also agreed to buy Savant Alaska, LLC for $70 million upfront plus contingent payments tied to future eastern North Slope development, with the August results saying closing is expected by year-end 2026, subject to regulatory approval and customary conditions. In Uruguay, it signed Eni S.p.A. as a partner on offshore Block 6.
The quarterly report lists matters to weigh. In a dispute over its 2015 sale of Australian operations, Santos, which acquired the buyer, maintains counterclaims of about AUD 57 million and has filed a separate suit tied to a potential tax liability of about AUD 133 million. On May 11, 2026, the company received a draft Environmental Protection Agency penalty assessment over alleged Clean Air Act violations at Permian Basin facilities, and a fine above $300,000 is possible. At June 30, it also carried $847 million of contingent liabilities for potential decommissioning of sold Gulf of America properties.
Outlook and next dates
On August 5, the company raised its full-year 2026 U.S. oil production outlook to 123,000 barrels per day, lowered lease operating expense guidance by $25 million to $1.5 billion and raised its expected exit run-rate cost savings to about $500 million from $450 million. These are management's own estimates. The third-quarter results call is set for Thursday, November 5, at 10 a.m. Central time.
