RBOB gasoline futures fell 0.05% to US$3.17 a gallon in Thursday's session on 29 October, a pause after weeks of gains that left the market flat as Middle East talks continued and US stocks rebuilt. The price matters to refiners such as Valero (NYSE:VLO), whose profit comes from the spread between crude and the fuels it sells.
RBOB, the New York Harbor reformulated blendstock benchmark for US petrol, is down 0.09% on the week and 2.67% on the month. It remains 85.49% higher since the start of the year and 67.68% above a year ago. Gasoline is a separate benchmark from heating oil, and the two have recently told different stories: heating oil fell 1.90% on Thursday, while gasoline barely moved.
A Quiet Pump Market Inside a Tense Oil Market
Gasoline is the calm corner of the energy complex. Crude and diesel carry most of the geopolitical stress, while petrol is held back by the seasonal slowdown in driving and a rebuild in stocks, yet supply limits underneath stop the price from falling much further. The result is a market that barely moved on a day when crude fell.
Stocks Rebuild but Stay Below Normal
The EIA reported an unexpected 3.8 million barrel build in US gasoline inventories for the week ended 23 October. Gasoline inventories remain about 2% below seasonal norms, although they have recovered partially as driving demand eased. Pump prices have eased in recent weeks as driving demand weakened, a pattern normal for the end of the summer driving season.
Refiners Favor Diesel
Supply of petrol is also restrained. Refiners are prioritising higher-demand diesel ahead of winter, and seasonal maintenance is limiting output at facilities that operate near capacity. Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries are adding to geopolitical risks for fuel markets worldwide.
Because gasoline is made from crude, a change in oil usually feeds through to RBOB, though refining margins can move independently. Brent is near US$115 a barrel, and the US President recently warned Gulf states to prepare for a possible post-midterm military campaign against Iran, while negotiations over a potential peace deal continue.
What It Means for Valero and Fuel Consumers
Valero is one of the largest independent US refiners. It reported on 22 October that its third-quarter refining margin nearly tripled to US$39.24 per barrel, while throughput fell about 4% to 2.97 million barrels a day. Because refiners earn the spread between products and crude, strong gasoline prices help only if crude costs do not rise by as much.
Valero's mix is also diversified. Its ethanol segment earned an operating profit of US$272 million in the third quarter, up from US$183 million a year earlier, and the company also runs a renewable diesel business, so earnings do not rest on gasoline alone.
Consumers feel the pump price more directly than industrial users do. Airlines and logistics firms buy mostly diesel or jet fuel rather than gasoline, so gasoline exposure is larger for fuel retailers, rental car firms and household budgets.
Gasoline Watch: Refinery Maintenance, Stocks and the Midterms
The near-term markers are the next EIA weekly inventory report, refinery maintenance news, Brent's direction and the 3 November US midterm elections. The roll of the front-month contract at the end of October can move headline prices without any change in underlying conditions, so contract months matter when comparing quotes.
Prices could be supported by further refinery outages, disruption to Gulf crude supply or low stocks as refiners keep favouring diesel. A failure of diplomatic efforts after the midterms would add to the risk premium in crude. Weakness could follow de-escalation, higher refinery runs after maintenance ends or further inventory builds, and winter-grade gasoline is cheaper to make and demand typically declines after summer.
