Marathon Petroleum (NYSE:MPC) has no Earnings until early November, but worries about refining margins gave investors a reason to lock in gains after a spectacular run this year.
Cashing in on a winner
Marathon Petroleum has been one of the standout performers of 2026, with its share price having more than doubled since the start of the year. On Thursday, some of those gains came off the table. Shares fell on October 29 as refining-margin worries sparked profit-taking, according to one report.
There were no earnings behind the move. Marathon, one of the largest US refiners, is not scheduled to report until early November. The decline reflected concern about the profit refiners make on turning crude into fuel, and a natural impulse to bank gains after an enormous rally.
What a refining Margin is, and why it matters
A refiner's profit depends less on the price of oil than on the spread between what it pays for crude and what it earns selling gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. When product prices run well ahead of crude, refiners thrive. When that gap narrows, earnings expectations come down quickly.
Inventory data offered some context for that concern. The Energy Information Administration reported that US gasoline inventories rose by 3.9 million barrels while crude stocks fell by 1.9 million barrels, according to market data. Rising gasoline stocks can weigh on fuel prices, while a crude draw can support feedstock costs.
The Russian diesel question
Diesel added uncertainty. Russia has been a key part of the global diesel market, and traders were trying to read its next moves. "There are mixed signals coming from Russia about what they are going to do," said one energy analyst. A bank note added: "The silence has allowed Russian refinery runs to rebound by 350,000 barrels a day last week." More Russian refining output could mean more fuel Supply on world markets, a possible headwind for refiners' margins.
Oil and energy on the day
Crude itself drifted lower. West Texas Intermediate settled at $102.00, down 78 cents, and Brent settled at $114.88, down 44 cents, after both had been down more than $2 intraday. Diplomatic efforts over the Middle East conflict pushed prices lower, though traders also weighed reports of Houthi strikes on Saudi energy facilities and a claim by Iran's Revolutionary Guard that three tankers hit sea mines south of the Strait of Hormuz. "Oil prices are under pressure today amid renewed diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict in the Middle East," said one Commodity analyst.
The energy sector dipped at midday as oil trimmed some of its war premium.
A peer with strong numbers
The day was not uniformly bleak for refiners. PBF Energy (NYSE:PBF) reported adjusted earnings of $12.78 per share against $11.11 expected, with Revenue of $12.13 billion, well ahead of the $10.78 billion estimate, and raised its dividend, according to market data. Strong results from a rival show that the refining backdrop has not been uniformly weak.
The market backdrop
The S&P 500 slipped 23.59 points to 7,720.39, dragged by Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)'s worst day since its 2004 IPO, while more than 400 members rose. The Dow lost 132.54 points to 52,342.56, and the Russell 2000 gained 28.71 points to 2,859.22.
What to watch
Marathon's early-November report is the main event, when investors will see how margins held up and what management expects for the winter fuel season. Before then, weekly EIA inventory data and diesel market signals, particularly from Russia, will be closely tracked.
Geopolitics remains a wild card. Oil traders are pricing the risk of a US strike on Iran after the November 3 midterm elections, and any escalation or breakthrough in diplomacy could swing crude and fuel prices sharply.
