Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (NYSE:AJG) heads into Friday's session with two new data points: a third-quarter report released at about 4:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, and a higher price target from a brokerage on Friday morning. No pre-market quote was available, so the stock's early direction has not been established.
What Gallagher reported
Revenue before reimbursements rose to $3,930 million from $3,325 million a year earlier, a gain of roughly 18%. Adjusted EPS was $3.00, up from $2.31. Reported EPS was $1.55, and net Earnings were $406 million.
The organic figures carry the most weight, because they show how the core Business grew before acquisitions. Organic growth was 5% in the Brokerage segment, where supplemental commissions rose 14%, and 10% in Risk Management. Market data put the Street consensus at $2.99 for EPS and $3.98 billion for revenue. On those numbers, the adjusted EPS figure just beat expectations and Revenue came in slightly below.
Chairman and CEO J. Patrick Gallagher Jr. said in the release: "These results demonstrate the strength and resilience of our diversified model as market conditions evolve."
The brokerage call and the index angle
One brokerage kept its Outperform rating and raised its price target to $302 from $271 in a note issued Friday, according to market data. The data said the new target implies about 12.7% upside from the stock's reference price of $267.99, which is close to the top of its one-year range of $190.75 to $272.80.
That brokerage was not alone. Market data shows another brokerage reaffirmed a Buy rating with a $296 target on Friday and that a third raised its target to $307 from $297. Across the firms tracked, the consensus is "Moderate Buy," with 17 Buy and four Hold ratings and an average target of $283.89.
Gallagher is one of the largest insurance Brokers in the world and an S&P 500 member. Market data lists its Market Value at about $68.7 billion. Brokers earn commissions and fees rather than carrying Underwriting risk directly, and investors often treat the group as a defensive growth corner of financials. That reputation is useful on a day like today. S&P 500 futures were down about 1% and Nasdaq-100 futures were down more than 2% early Friday, as Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) results reignited worries about AI spending, while Dow futures were close to flat.
Peers are moving too. A pre-market snapshot at 8:23 a.m. ET showed Marsh McLennan up 2.58% and Chubb (NYSE:CB) up 2.73% before the bell, both of which have their own recent results to point to.
Risks and what to watch next
The stock is not cheap. Market data lists a trailing P/E of about 44, which leaves less room for disappointment. Brokers also benefit when commercial insurance prices are rising, so a softening pricing cycle would slow organic growth. Revenue that came in a little under consensus suggests the quarter was not a clean sweep. The gap between adjusted EPS of $3.00 and reported EPS of $1.55 is also wide, so investors may want to look closely at the adjustments behind it.
At the open, traders will watch whether Gallagher can push through the top of its one-year range on the back of the target increases. Beyond today, insurance-pricing commentary from peers will matter, as will the rate path. Fed funds futures implied roughly 85% odds of a December hike after this week's Fed hold, and higher rates lift the interest income brokers earn on client funds they hold.
