CleanSpark (NASDAQ:CLSK) is trading lower before Friday's open as the fallout from a record theft at Binance ripples through crypto stocks. The bitcoin miner was down nearly 5% in pre-market trade as of 4:04 a.m. ET, according to market data, and a live market listing named it among crypto names down 5% or more before the bell. CleanSpark has not released company-specific news to explain the drop. It is moving with bitcoin.

The trigger

Binance, the largest crypto exchange, paused withdrawals after a suspected hack of about $6.3 billion, which one report described as the biggest crypto heist on record, according to a morning market brief. Market data said the funds were drained across 10 blockchains in roughly 20 minutes on Thursday evening.

Crypto market reports said TRM Labs and Elliptic attributed the attack to North Korea-linked hackers and that about $3 billion of the stolen Assets has been frozen. Binance expects to restart withdrawals by Sunday and has said it will cover all losses, according to one report.

Bitcoin hit an overnight low of $76,400, its weakest since September 18, and was near $77,350 later, down 3.1% over 24 hours, per crypto market reports. More than $1.5 billion of leveraged crypto bets were liquidated.

How CleanSpark is exposed

CleanSpark is one of the larger US-listed bitcoin miners, and its Earnings rise and fall with the price of the coin. In its September operational update, the company said it produced 529 bitcoin during the month and held 13,530 bitcoin at September 30, with 3,475 of those posted as collateral or held as receivables tied to derivatives, according to company filings. At Friday's prices, a move of a few thousand dollars in bitcoin changes the value of that treasury by tens of millions of dollars.

The company said it had 50 exahash per second of operational hashrate and 1.8 gigawatts of contracted power, of which 808 megawatts was in use. That power position is the base for its push into AI data centers. In September it closed a $2.276 billion offering of 7.875% senior secured notes due 2031 through a Subsidiary to fund its Sandersville, Georgia, data center, which it said is tied to about $6.6 billion of contracted Lease Revenue and is "fully funded through completion."

That Data Center story would normally be a counterweight to bitcoin weakness. On Friday, though, AI infrastructure is also under pressure after Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s spending plans and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s outlook raised questions about AI returns. Nasdaq-100 futures were down about 2.6% around 8 a.m. ET, according to a live market blog.

Index context and risks

CleanSpark trades on the Nasdaq and is part of the Nasdaq Composite. It is falling alongside Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN), Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR), Riot Platforms (NASDAQ:RIOT) and Hut 8 (NASDAQ:HUT), which suggests a sector move rather than a company problem.

The near-term risk is that the Binance situation drags on. Delays to the Withdrawal restart, or evidence that the stolen funds are being sold into the market, could add pressure. On the other side, Binance has pledged to make users whole, and spot bitcoin ETFs posted $17 million of inflows on Thursday, their fourth straight day, crypto market reports said, which suggests some institutional buyers are still stepping in.

Company-specific risks include higher Debt service from the new notes and execution on the data center build, with deliveries expected from late 2027. CleanSpark has also said its monthly operational updates will end as it shifts to quarterly reporting, so investors will rely on its next earnings release for fresh production and holdings data.
