MARA Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) edged lower on Thursday as a near-record level of computing power on the Bitcoin network crowded miners' economics, with the Cryptocurrency hovering around $80,000.

A crowded network, a thinner slice

MARA Holdings, one of the largest publicly traded bitcoin miners, slipped on Thursday, October 29, as pressure on Mining margins weighed on the group. The stock traded at $7.10 in premarket dealing, according to one report, and a later headline showed the shares still lower during the regular session.

The driver was not a company announcement. The report pointed instead to a squeeze on bitcoin miners' margins, with network hashrate, the total computing power securing the bitcoin blockchain, near a record.

That combination matters because of how Bitcoin Mining works. New coins are issued to miners on a fixed schedule. When more machines join the network, each participant's share of those rewards shrinks unless it adds capacity at the same pace. A near-record hashrate means more competition for the same pool of bitcoin, which pushes up the cost of producing each coin.

Bitcoin price offered little help

Miners can absorb rising competition when the price of bitcoin is climbing. That was not the case on Thursday. The report put bitcoin at about $80,000 during the day.

Sources disagreed on where the cryptocurrency ended up. A midday snapshot showed bitcoin at roughly $81,611 and slightly higher, while a later market quote showed about $77,719, sharply lower. The timing of that later slide could not be confirmed. Either way, bitcoin was well off the levels that would make a crowded network more comfortable for miners.

Other crypto-linked names also eased in early trading, according to the report. Riot Platforms (NASDAQ:RIOT) and CleanSpark (NASDAQ:CLSK) both fell in premarket trading on the same Margin concerns, and Galaxy Digital (NASDAQ:GLXY) and Circle Internet (NYSE:CRCL) moved lower with the group.

A small-cap exception

MARA's slip ran against the broader small-cap mood. The Russell 2000 gained 28.71 points to close at 2,859.22, outpacing the large-cap indexes by a wide margin. The S&P 500 slipped 23.59 points to 7,720.39, and the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 365.13 points to 26,184.72 as Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) suffered its worst day since its 2004 IPO.

The rotation favoured health care, financials and real estate rather than high-volatility technology-linked stocks. Bitcoin miners, which often trade like leveraged bets on the cryptocurrency, sat on the wrong side of that move.

Rates and energy in the background

Two macro forces also shape how miners fare. The first is the interest-rate outlook. The Federal Reserve held rates steady on Wednesday in a 10–2 vote, with two officials favouring a hike, and Thursday's data showed GDP growth accelerating and PCE Inflation running hot. One Wealth advisor said: "Today's data strengthens the case for another rate increase in December." Tighter Monetary Policy has historically been a headwind for speculative Assets such as bitcoin.

The second is power. Mining is energy-intensive, and the September PCE data showed energy prices climbing sharply amid a war-related oil squeeze. Oil stayed elevated on Thursday, with WTI settling at $102.00.

What to watch

For MARA, the key variables are the bitcoin price and network hashrate. A rebound in bitcoin would ease the margin squeeze, while further gains in hashrate would intensify it. Investors will also watch for updates on the company's production and costs.

On the macro side, Friday's Employment Cost index and the Fed's December 8–9 decision could sway risk appetite for crypto assets. Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR), the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, slipped in after-hours trading on Thursday after its results, another signal for sentiment across the crypto-linked complex heading into November.
