Cost Savings Cushion a Lower Revenue Outlook
Equifax (NYSE:EFX) shares were trading up 10.53% at $175.27 on Tuesday, against a prior close of $158.57, after third quarter results beat on Earnings and eased fears about a weak U.S. Mortgage market. Adjusted EPS of $2.26 was up 11% from a year earlier and above a consensus of about $2.20. Revenue rose 10% to $1.693 billion, in line with estimates, and GAAP Net Income rose 32% to $211.7 million.
The Atlanta-based data and analytics company operates through Workforce Solutions, US Information Solutions and International. The move is outpacing the broader market.
Management trimmed the full-year revenue midpoint to $6.661 billion because of mortgage weakness, but cut adjusted EPS guidance by only $0.04 to a midpoint of $8.50, citing AI-driven cost savings and a higher EBITDA Margin outlook. Fourth quarter guidance of $2.07 to $2.17 in EPS and $1.605 billion to $1.635 billion in revenue came in below consensus.
Diversified Markets and Workforce Solutions Offset Mortgage Pressure
Diversified markets revenue, which excludes mortgage, grew 8%, helped by a record new product vitality index above 17%. U.S. mortgage revenue still rose 15% despite a weaker market late in the quarter, and the adjusted EBITDA margin improved to 33.1% from 32.7%.
Workforce Solutions revenue rose 7% to $693.9 million with a 44.1% operating margin, while US Information Solutions grew 13% to $599.1 million and International rose 9% to $399.5 million. Selling, general and administrative expenses fell to $390.4 million from $434.1 million, and the diluted share count declined to 118.1 million from 124.1 million.
A Run of Target Cuts and a Downgrade Set Up the Rebound
The shares had been under pressure from a run of price-target cuts and a downgrade by Oppenheimer on mortgage concerns, so the beat has prompted a sharp rebound from the prior close. Equifax returned $158 million to shareholders in the quarter, including $92 million of Buybacks and $66 million of dividends.
Equifax has a market Capitalization of $20.59 billion, a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 18.79 and a trailing ratio of 28.35, with trailing EPS of $7.99 and a Dividend yield of 1.24%. The shares still trade about 27% below the 52-week high of $238.94.
Mortgage Trends and the Círculo de Crédito Closing Are the Next Catalysts
Equifax kept its earnings outlook almost intact by leaning on cost efficiencies, even as it trimmed revenue expectations. Investors are watching whether mortgage trends stabilize and whether the pending Círculo de Crédito Acquisition closes in the fourth quarter as expected. The softer fourth quarter guide and mortgage sensitivity remain the main points to monitor.
